Learning Game Level Design: A Gamification Approach

Introduction:- Game Level is the playable area for a game where the actual game
is happening. If you want to make a good game, make sure that you have complete
right information about the Game Level Design.

I spent a lot of years on the research part of a good game level design. Came with a solution for
good game level design. Now I have a pipeline for this one.

Few point we should not miss. I am explaining one by one here.

1. Pre-Production
2. Layout Design
3. Block-out Design
4. 3D assets
5. Game Environment Composition
6. Release Game

1. Pre-Production Phase:- Here we need to give a brief about our game. We need to say
story of our game in a single line. I create a minimal checklist that students need to
complete in the pre-production phase.

Game Story/ Name:- ImaginXP Shooting Game

Software:- Unity

Time:- 30 days

2. Layout:- Its a 2D representation for a Game Level. But let me clear you that its a non playable
area for a Game. These are the flat images for my design but having importance.
Layout is a flat image, similar to the top view of any object. Here we are not clear about the
object position on the “Y” axis. For example, few objects or game assets are underground and
few are on bridges. Solution for this one is 3D representation.

3. Block-out Design:- This is the 3D representation for layout and solution for previous
problems. One important point here is, we need Game characters here before the starting of
this phase.
Import game characters and start designing for block-out. Reason for this is to get the scaled
objects inside the level. Let me clear this one with an example: We need to design windows,
gates and walls for game projects. So character is needed for reference so make sure that our
walls, gate and windows are properly scaled, else if not so, may be at some point of time our
character won't be able to enter inside the house if the door is not properly scaled.

4. 3D asset modeling:- This is the time to create a 3D object by taking block-out as a reference
to get an adjunct scaled object. You can create 3D models inside any 3D digital content creation
tools like Autodesk Maya, Blender or 3D Max.
5. Game Environment Composition:- Here we need to compose our assets inside the game
engine. 3D Models we will export from 3D digital content creation tools. Texture for these 3D
models i.e. Maya or Blender or Max, we will create and export from 2D digital content creation
tools i.e. Substance Painter.

In case of composition, we need to replace block-out design with high graphics quality 3D
models.

6. This is the time to play and test our game play. If any bug or error is here, the developer or
designer needs to fix this. If everything is working fine within our game, we will go for final file
composition. Selection of file type is important and depends on which Digital device we are
going to publish this Game.
Conclusion:- Level Design is art. To learn it, we need to spend time playing some games and
figure-out the technology used in it. There are some Universities or colleges in India from where
you can complete a Game design degree to learn Game level design. From my personal
experience, I will suggest, collegeDekho will provide you with the best college list to pursue a
game design degree.
