Question 9 [5 marks = 3, 2]
Mr Flame has embraced his namesake and has installed a fire pit in his backyard. He notices
that the intensity of heat he can feel from the fire (in watts per square metre) is inversely
proportional to the square of the distance (in metres) he is from the fire.
One night, he measures the intensity to be 124.8 𝑊/𝑚2 at a distance of 4.7 metres away.
a) Determine the equation representing the relationship between the intensity (𝐼 in 𝑊/𝑚2 )
and distance (𝑑 in m).

b) Using your equation in (a), determine the distance from the fire if the intensity is 80
𝑊/𝑚2 . Give your answer correct to 2 d.p.
