Problem 01:

A 480-V, 60-Hz, Y- connected synchronous generator, with the synchronous reactance of


1.04 ohm and negligible armature resistance. If the generator is operating at rated voltage.
a). Calculate the voltage regulation and draw its phasor diagram.:
a1. If load current is 100A at 0.8 PF lagging

b). Calculate the real and reactive power delivered in each case.

Problem 02:
A three-phase, 100 kVA, 60 Hz, 480V, four-pole, wye-connected, cylindrical-rotor
synchronous motor has an armature resistance and a synchronous reactance of 0.09 and 1.5
Ω per phase, respectively. Its combined friction and windage losses are 2.46 kW and its
core losses are 1.941 kW. Ignore its field losses. If the motor is operating at unity power
factor, determine the following:
a) The internal generated voltage (Ans: 339,8132,070 V)
b) The torque angle (Ans: Tm = 574,53 Nm)
c) The efficiency at full load. (Ans: η = 92,34 %)
d) The output torque at full load. (Ans: T = 530,52 Nm)
Problem 03:
A three-phase, 60 Hz, 480 V, wye-connected, two-pole cylindrical-rotor synchronous
generator has a synchronous reactance of 1.2 Ω per phase. Its armature resistance is small
enough to be neglected. Its full-load armature current is 75 A at 0.85 lagging power factor.
Its combined friction and windage losses are 1.8 kW and its core losses are 1.1 kW. The
field current is constant at no load. Neglect its dc field losses and determine the following:
a) Its terminal voltage when it is loaded with the rated current having a power factor of:
a1) 0.85 lagging
a2) unity
a3) 0.85 leading
b) Its efficiency when it is loaded with the rated current at a lagging power factor of 0.85.
(Ans: η = 94,81%).
c) Its input torque and induced counter torque when it is operating at full load.
(Ans: 148,28 Nm)
d) Its voltage regulation when it is operating under full load with a power factor of:
d1) 0.85 lagging (Ans: Ear = 333,4313,260)
d2) unity (Ans: 291,3817,990)
d3) 0.85 leading. (Ans: 242,1218,420)
Problem 04:
A three-phase, 50 Hz, 380 V, wye-connected, four-pole cylindrical-rotor synchronous
generator has a synchronous reactance of 0.9 Ω per phase. Its armature resistance is
negligible. Its friction and windage losses are 1.0 kW and its core losses are 1.0 kW.
Neglect its armature resistance and dc field losses. The field current is constant at no load.
Its full-load armature current is 50 A at 0.9 PF lagging. Determine the following:
(a) Its terminal voltage when it is delivering the rated current at a unity power factor. (Ans:
223,9611,590)
(b) Its efficiency when it is loaded with the rated current at a lagging power factor of 0.9.
(Ans: 93,67%)
(c) Its input torque and induced counter torque when it is operating at full load. (Ans:
188,56 Nm)
(d) Its voltage regulation when it is operating under full load at a unity power factor. (Ans:
7,61%)
Problem 05:
A three-phase, 60 Hz, 480 V, wye-connected, cylindrical-rotor synchronous motor has a
synchronous reactance of 3 . Its armature resistance is negligible. Its friction and windage
losses are 4 kW and its core losses are 3 kW. The motor is connected to a 75 HP mechanical
load and is operating at a leading power factor of 0.85.
a) Find the values of Ia, IL, and Ear of the motor and draw its phasor diagram.(Ans: Ia =
89,0831,790 A; Ear = 475,65-28,530 V)

b) If the mechanical load is increased to 100 hp, draw the new phasor diagram.
c) Find the values of Ia, IL, and Ear and the PF of the motor in Part (b). (Ans: Ia = IL =
103,2818,130 A; Ear = 475,65-38,250 V; PF = 0,95 leading)
Problem 06:
A three-phase, 60 Hz, 277.1281 V, delta-connected, cylindrical-rotor synchronous motor
has a synchronous reactance of 4 Ω. Its armature resistance is negligible. Its combined
friction and windage losses are 2.5 kW and its core losses are 2.25 kW. The motor is
connected to a 20 HP mechanical load and is operating at a leading power factor of 0.80.
a) Find the values of Ia, IL and Ear of the motor and draw its phasor diagram. (Ans: Ia =
38,8536,870 A; IL = 67,3036,870 A; Ear = 221,9734,070 V)
b) If the mechanical load is increased to 75 HP, draw the new phasor diagram.
c) Find the values of Ia, IL, and Ear and the PF of the motor in Part (b).
