Social Smarts: Building Strong Connections

Concept Note

This program draws inspiration from a combination of group counseling approaches:

Social Learning Theory (SLT)

SLT, as championed by Albert Bandura, emphasizes learning through observation,
imitation, and reinforcement. My program will incorporate role-playing activities, where students
will observe and practice positive social interactions, fostering skill development through
experience and feedback.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT principles are integrated through self-reflection exercises that help students identify
negative thought patterns impacting their social behavior. The program will then equip them with
coping mechanisms and communication skills to navigate social situations effectively.

Yalom's Group Therapy Factors

This framework by Irvin D. Yalom highlights the therapeutic power of group dynamics.
Social Smarts utilizes factors like instillation of hope, universality, interpersonal learning, and
altruism to create a supportive environment where students can learn from each other's
experiences and encourage one another's progress.

Rationale

These combined approaches can create a comprehensive program. SLT provides the
foundation for skill development through practice and observation. CBT adds an introspective
layer, helping students modify negative thought patterns affecting their social interactions.
Finally, Yalom's group therapy factors ensure a supportive and empowering environment where
students will learn not only from the program but also from each other.

By combining these approaches, Social Smarts aims to achieve the following outcomes:

a. Improved Social Skills: Students will develop and refine skills like communication,
active listening, teamwork, and conflict resolution.
b. Increased Self-Awareness: Students will gain a better understanding of their emotions
and social strengths and weaknesses.
c. Enhanced Social Confidence: The program fosters a sense of belonging and
acceptance, increasing students' confidence in social interactions.
d. Development of Healthy Relationships: By learning effective communication and
conflict resolution skills, students will be equipped to build and maintain positive
relationships.

Social Smarts utilizes a blend of established theories and group dynamics to create a
program that empowers students to become socially adept and well-adjusted individuals.
