Age-Word Problem

Nicole is three times as old as her brother, Jack. In 5 years, Nicole's age will be twice Jack's age. What are
their current ages?

Nicole Jack Equation

Present N J N=2J

Future N+5 J+5 N+5=2(J+5)

From the given problem, it is seen that Nicole is three times as old as Jack. And after 5 years, Jack will
now be twice as old as Nicole, translating to these equations.

N = 3J and N+ 5 = 2(J + 5)

For now, let's focus on the second equation and simplify both sides.

N + 5 = 2J+ 10 -> N = 2J + 10 - 5 -> N = 2J + 5

since N= 3J we can now substitute the variables of the first equation to the second equation, which
gives.

3J = 2J + 5

divide both sides by 2J which gives us.

J= 5

Which means that J is currently 5 years old. Now just substitute and multiply using the first equation.

N = 3J N=3(5) N= 15

N = 15 + 5 N = 20 J = 5 + 5 J = 10
Mixture Problem

A chemist has two solutions: one that is 30% acid and another that is 50% acid. How many liters of each
solution should the chemist mix together to get 20 liters of a solution that is 40% acid?

Solution:

xx be the amount (in liters) of the 30% acid solution.

yy be the amount (in liters) of the 50% acid solution.

We have two conditions:

The total volume of the mixture is 20 liters: x+y=20x + y = 20

The total amount of acid in the mixture must be 40% of 20 liters (which is 8 liters of acid):
0.30x+0.50y=80.30x + 0.50y = 8

We can now solve this system of equations to find xx and yy.

Solution Steps:

From the first equation: x+y=20 ⟹ y=20−xx + y = 20 \implies y = 20 - x

Substitute y=20−xy = 20 - x into the second equation: 0.30x+0.50(20−x)=80.30x + 0.50(20 - x) = 8

Simplify and solve for xx: 0.30x+10−0.50x=80.30x + 10 - 0.50x = 8 −0.20x+10=8-0.20x + 10 = 8 −0.20x=−2-

0.20x = -2 x=−2−0.20=10x = \frac{-2}{-0.20} = 10

Now substitute x=10x = 10 back into the equation y=20−xy = 20 - x: y=20−10=10y = 20 - 10 = 10

Therefore, the chemist should mix 10 liters of the 30% acid solution with 10 liters of the 50% acid
solution to get 20 liters of a solution that is 40% acid.
Distance, Rate, and Time Problem

Jack and Jill are driving towards each other from two cities, 240 miles apart. Tom is driving at 50 mph,
while Alex is driving at 70 mph. How many hours will it take for them to meet?

Identify the Variables and Set Up the Equation:

Jack's speed: 50 mph

Jill's speed: 70 mph

Total distance them: 240 miles between

d = vt

r = 50t

dA = 70t

DT + DA = 240

50t + 70t = 240

120t = 240 -divide it by 120 to get sa final answer.

120 120

t=2

1. How did you formulate your own problem from the 3 topics mentioned?
By analyzing videos and articles on how to form problems for each topic, after understanding the
possible structures of each problem, I tried to come up with my own, by making it not too simple but
easy to understand.

2. How did you determine that your own constructed problem is aligned in the 3 topics mentioned?

By comparing all 3 of my problems to ones that I've reviewed, ensuring that it makes sense and follows
the general structure to properly get a correct answer out of the question.

3. What do you think of the level of difficulty you encountered upon constructing the problem?

Well one definitely stands out in terms of difficulty not into in constructing the problem but also in
answering, and that was the Mixture problem, but other that the other problems were fairly easy to
construct a problem for.

4. How did you arrive at your answers?

By following the correct procedures on how to properly and precisely get the correct answers, and also
double-checking to spot unnoticed errors made.

5. Enumerate the steps you follow upon answering your constructed problems.

First: Reviewed and analyzed examples for reference in constructing my own problems.

Second: After gathering information, I made my own problems and step by step wrote how I answered
each of them.

Third: Then I double-checked and reviewed my work, searching for errors to correct.
