SP24-BBAH-0020 SECTION:AM LAB TASK 4 Objective: To determine the pH of water and soil Introduction: pH: Power of hydrogen-measures the acidity and basicity of a solution The pH scale of water ranges from 0 to 14, where pH< 7: Acidic pH = 7: Neutral pH > 7: Basic Soil pH ranges: Below 5.5 (Highly acidic): Suitable for crops like blueberries and marshy plants. Between 6.0-7.0 (Acidic to Neutral): Ideal for fruits and vegetable. Between 7.5-8.5 (Neutral to basic): Supports crops like lavender. Purpose of Soil pH measurement: To enhance microbial activity, improve nutrient availability, and determine soil quality for specific crops. Materials required: pH meter Litmus paper Distilled water Soil sample Beakers Stirring rod Procedure: 1. Water sample: Collect water in a clean beaker. Immerse the pH meter electrode into the water. Record the pH value displayed. 2. Soil sample: Collect a soil sample and remove debris. Mix 10-20g soil with distilled water in a 1:2 or 1:5 ratio. Stir the mixture thoroughly and let it settle for 10-15 minutes. Measure the pH using a pH meter. Record and interpret the pH value. Results: The observed pH of water sample is 7.03, which is neutral and ideal for general biological and chemical applications. And, the pH of soil sample is 7.08 which is acidic to neutral ideal for fruits and vegetables.
