BSMT III PILOT

Problem:
Anna is 5 years older than her brother. Sam. In 3 years, the sum of their ages will be 41. How old
are Anna and Sam now?

Solution:
Step 1: Define Variables
Let Sam's current age bez
Anna's current age is x +5| since Anna is 5 years older than Sam).

Step 2: Formulate the Equation

In 3 years:
 Sam's age will be x + 3
 Anna's age will be (x + 5) + 3 - x + 8

The problem says the sum of their ages in 3 years will be 41:
(x + 3) + (x + 8) = 41

Step 3: Solve the Equation

x + 3 + x + 8 = 41 2x + 11 = 41
2x - 41 – 11 = 41
2x = 41 - 11
2x = 30
x = 15
Step 4: Find Their Current Age
 Sam's current age: 215 years.
 Anna's current age: x + 5 - 20 years.

Final Answer:
Sam is 15 years old and Anna is 20 years old.
MIXTURE PROBLEM

How many gallons of 3% acid solution must be mix with 60 gallons of 10% acid
solution to obtain an acid solution that is 8% ? 24% gallons with 3% solution with 60% gallons
of 10% solution .
Solution: Lets us denote the amount of 3: Lets us denote the amount of 3% solution we
use . Then
Amount of solution Percentage Amount of solution (gallons)
(gallons)
Component 1 X 0.03 0.03x

Component 2 60 0.1 60 ( 0.1)

Component 3 X + 60 0.08 0.08 (x+60) = 0.03x + 60 (0.3)

We obtain the equation by stating that amount of solvent of that components must add up
to the amount of solvant . ( In other worlds, the last entry in the third row can be written in two
different ways; the product of x + 60 and 8% ; and the sum of 0.03x and 60(0.1)

0.08(x + 60) = 0.03x + 60(0.1)

0.08(x + 60) = 0.03x + 6 multiply by 100 to make numbers 'nice'
8(x + 60) = 3x + 600 distribute
8x + 480 = 3x + 600 subtract 3x
5x + 480 = 600 subtract 480
5x = 120 divide by 5
x = 24
Thus we need to mix 24 gallons of 3% solution with 60 gallons of 10% solution.
We check: suppose we mix the two solutions specified above. We need to find how much
solution and how much solvant we have, hoping that the amount of solvant indeed will be 8% of
the amount of mixture.
Amount of Solution Percentage Amount of Solvant
Component 1 60 gallons of 10% solution 0.1 ( 60) = 6 gallons
Component 2 24 gallons of 3% solution 0.03 (24) = 0.72 gallons

Mixture 84 gallons 6.72 gallons

8% of 84 is 0.08 (84) = 6.72 Thus our solution has the right concentration.
DISTANCE

Problem:
A cyclist travels from Town X to Town Y at a speed of 18 km/h. On the retum trip from Town Y
to Town X. the cyclist increases their speed to 24 km/h. If the total time for the round trip is 7
hours. what is the distance between Town X and Town Y?

Solution:
Step 1: Define Variables
Let the distance between Town X and Town Y be d kilometers
d
 Time to travel from Town X to Town Y= hours.
18
d
 Time to travel from Town Y to Town X = hour.
24

The total time for the round trip is given as 7 hours:

d D
+ =7
18 24

Step 2: Solve the Equation

Find the least common denominator (LCD) of 18 and 24, which is 72.
Rewrite the equation

4 D 3D
Combine the fractions + =7
72 72

7D
=7
72

D
Simplify: =1
72

Solve for d: D= 72

Step 3: Interpret the Result

The distance between Town X and Town Y is 72 kilometers.
Final Answer:
The distance between Town X and Town Y is 72 km.
• RATE
Problem:
A printer can print 40 pages in 10 minutes. A second printer can print 40 pages in 8 minutes. If
both printers work together, how long will it take them to print 120 pages?

Solution:
Step 1: Find Each Printer's Rate
The rate of a machine is the number of pages it prints per minute.
The first printer's rate
40 pages
=4 pages ❑ minute
10 mintes ❑

The second printer's rate:

40 pages
=5 pages /minute
10 minutes

Together, their combined rate is:

4 + 5= 9 pages/minute.

Step 2: Find the Time to Print 120 Pages.

If their combined rate is 9 pages per minute, the time it takes to print 120 pages is:

4+5-9 pages/minute.

Step 2: Find the Time to Print 120 Pages

If their combined rate is 9 pages per minute, the time it takes to print 120 pages is:

Totalpages 120
Time = combinedrate = 9 ≈ 13.33

Step 3: Interpret the Result

It will take approximately 13 minutes and 20 seconds for both printers working together to print
120 pages
Final Answer:
It will take 13 minutes and 20 seconds for the two pointers to print 120 pages together.
TIME
Problem:
A car travels from City A to City 8 at a speed of 60 km/h. On the way back from City 8 to City
A, it travels at a slower speed of 40 km/h due to traffic, if the total travel time for the round trip
is 5 hours, what is the distance between City A and City B?

Solution:
Step 1: Define Variables
Let the distance between City A and City B be d kilometers.
d
 Time taken to travel from City A to City B = hours
60
d
 Time taken to travel from City B to City A = hours
40
The total travel time for the round trip is 5 hours:
d d
+ =5
60 40

Step 2: Solve the Equation

Find the least common denominator (LCD) of 60 and 40, which is 120.
Rewrite the equation:
2d 3d
+ =5
120 120

Combine the fractions:

5d
=5
120

Simplify:
d
=1
24

Solve for d
d = 24
Step 3: Interpret the Result
The distance between City A and City B is 24 kilometers.

Final Answer:
The distance between City A and City B is 24 km.
