Good afternoon Ms.Hien and everyone, welcome to our presentation.

My name is
Ngoc Diem from group 7. Today, I’d like to talk about Mekong Delta – Can Tho. I’m
going to focus on 3 main point: Cai Rang Market, Ninh Kieu Wharf and Lung Ngoc
Hoang Forest.
- First of all, I and Mrs. Xuan Truong will talk about Cai Rang Floating Market.
- Then, Ms. Thanh Thao and Ms. Kieu Duy will show you about Ninh Kieu
Wharf. /wɔːf/
- And Ms Thanh Thu with Ms Bao Tran will tell you about Lung Ngoc Hoang
Forest.
- Finally, Dai Duong will summarize the 3 main point of the presentation.
So, let’s get started.
As you know, Cai Rang Floating Market /ˈmɑːr.kɪt/ in Can Tho City is one of the
biggest floating markets in Mekong Delta.
The UK's Rough Guide named the Cai Rang Floating Market one of the ten most
impressive /ɪmˈpres.ɪv/ markets in the world, describing it as a place of fancy
boats full of "tropical colors.”
The tourism website Your Amazing Places named Cai Rang one of the top six
floating markets in Asia. The Cai Rang floating market was recognized as a national
intangible cultural heritage in 2016.
Cai Rang Floating Market is located at 46 Hai Ba Trung Street, Tan An, Ninh Kieu,
Can Tho.
The floating market is on the Can Tho River (a part of Hau River), Cai Rang District –
about 6km away from the center of Can Tho City in the direction of Soc Trang or
around 45 mins away from Ninh Kieu Wharf by boat.
The market was born 100 years old, at the same time, where rivers prevailed /prɪ
ˈveɪld/ and the infrastructure /ˈɪn.frəˌstrʌk.tʃɚ/ was underdeveloped
/ˌʌn.də.dɪˈvel.əpt/ boat were a primay mode of transpostation /ˌtræn.spɔː
ˈteɪ.ʃən/ like motobikes or cars are in other regions.
Cruising /ˈkruː.zɪŋ/ through /θruː/ the river in a boat, local vendors /ˈven.dər/
conduct /kənˈdʌkt/ all their business right on the water, all the goods are
transpoted /ˈtræn.spɔːt/ to the market by rafts /ræft/, sampans /ˈsæm.pæn/
and boats, the locals come to the market to buy foods for their family and traders
come to here to buy fruits and vegetables and bring them to other market or to
many mainland /ˈmeɪn.lænd/ wholesale /ˈhəʊl.seɪl/ markets. That why Cai
Rang Floating Market was born and become a center for commerce /ˈkɒm.ɜːs/ in
Can Tho City and neighboring provinces such as An Giang, Vinh Long.
The name “Cai Rang” comes from a Khmer word meaning “terracotta /ˌter.ə
ˈkɒt.ə/ pots”, which the Khmer people in An Giang province used to make and sell
in this area.
The Cai Rang Floating Market typically /ˈtɪp.ɪ.kəl.i/ operates /ˈɒp.ər.eɪt/ every
day from the early morning hours (around 5am or 6am) until late morning, usually
around 10am. In the early morning, the waterway becomes a maze of hundreds of
boats and junks of all sizes are anchored /ˈæŋ.kər/ along the river about a
kilometre; all carrying a variety /vəˈraɪ.ə.ti/ of seasonal fruits and vegetables. We
should arrive earlier in the morning to experience the market at its liveliest and
most photogenic /ˌfəʊ.təˈdʒen.ɪk/—and to avoid the plethora /ˈpleθ.ər.ə/ of
oncoming tourist boats.
Cai Rang Floating Market does not open in lunar festive days, such as the first and
second days of the first lunar month, Doan Ngo Festival (the fifth day of the fifth
lunar month).

Next, I will introduce about what to see

at cai rang floating market:
The first, you will see local agricultural products trading activites from
boats to boats directly:
Cai Rang Floating Market is specialized /ˈspeʃ.əl.aɪzd/ as a wholesale market of
fruits, agricultural /ˌæɡ.rɪˈkʌl.tʃər.əl/ products of the region.
Goods here are concentrated /ˈkɒn.sən.treɪ.tɪd/ in a large number.
You can see the smooth performances of traders juggling /ˈdʒʌɡ.lɪŋ/ fruit from
boat to boat. Just look at what’s tied to the long pole above the boat to see
what they’re selling. Local people and surrounding areas often use middle-size
boats, canoes /kəˈnuː/ to carry agricultural products to consume here, while the
big boats are owned by traders to deliver /dɪˈlɪv.ər/ fruit to everywhere.
The second, we can enjoy beatiful sunrise on the way and stop for
breakfast on a local boat:
You shouldn’t miss out on interesting eating experiences while visiting the floating
market! Many floating restaurants open to serve /sɜːv/ breakfast for both sellers
and shoppers. Here, you can find most local dishes, such as “com tam” (broken rice
with grilled pork, egg), “pho”, “hu tieu”, “bun rieu” – some kinds of noodles that
served with beef, pork and crab… With only 25,000 VND (around 1 USD), you can
surely treat your hunger with quite a hearty meal.
Don’t forget that people here serve a different type of coffee that you may not see
anywhere: Ca Phe Kho. People keep coffee in a clay cook with fire to make it hot and
good smell. With one dollar, you can have coffee for two! But if you are not familiar
with a bitter of coffee, coconut is a different choice and sold around.
The special things you can see is Cay Beo – a pole hanging kinds of fruits
or goods that local people sell in Cai Rang Floating Market:

Unlike shops and stalls /stɔːl/ in ordinary /ˈɔː.dən.əri/ markets, sellers cannot cry
out to advertise /ˈæd.və.taɪz/ their wares /weəz/ since it is impossible to be
heard amidst /əˈmɪd/ the noise of running boat engines /ˈen.dʒɪn/.
That is why it is essential /ɪˈsen.ʃəl/ for each boat to display a long upright pole
(the locals call “Cay Beo”) at its bow /baʊ/ on which the sellers hang samples of
their products.
If they sell bananas and durian, they will hang bananas and durian on the pole
(“Cay Beo”) so that buyers can see what items are on sale from a distance. This way
of selling is simple but has existed /ɪɡˈzɪsted/ over a hundred years.
And the last one may you can see is daily life of the locals:
There are boats as “mobile apartment” on the river with flower pots, animals and
full interior /ɪnˈtɪə.ri.ər/ such as TV, DVD, stereo,.. including motobycle parked on
the boat. Not only is the vehicle /ˈvɪə.kəl/ used to purchase /ˈpɜː.tʃəs/ and
deliver, but it is aslo the residence /ˈrez.ɪ.dəns/ of trader’s family. All daily
activities take place on boats.
