General Overview of Power System

• Generation Stations: a factory where electricity is produced:

• Transmission Substations: Transmission substations integrate transmission lines into a network
with multiple parallel interconnections, so that power can flow freely over long distances from any
generator to any consumer. This transmission grid is often called the bulk power system. Typically,
transmission lines operate at voltages above 138 kV.
• Transmission Lines: A transmission line is a cable or structure that conducts electromagnetic waves
in a contained manner.
• Distribution Substations: Distribution substation typically operates at 2.4 – 34.5 kV voltage levels,
and deliver electric energy directly to industrial and residential consumers. Distribution feeders
transport power from the distribution substations to the end consumers’ premises. These feeders
serve a large number of premises and usually contain many branches.
• Distribution lines: are essential components in the power delivery network, responsible for
transporting electricity from substations to homes, businesses, and industries. Operating at lower
voltages than transmission lines, they are the final link in the power supply chain, ensuring reliable
and safe energy delivery to end-users.
