ECE 218 Course Outline
Course Purpose
This course aims to inculcate the working principles and applications of semiconductor
devices and Op-Amps, their current-voltage relationship and their critical parameters
impacting the design of amplifiers.
Course Objectives:
This course is designed to enable learning about:
1) Introduction to electricity.
2) Semiconductors and diodes.
3) Bipolar junction transistors (BJT).
4) Field effect transistors (FET).
Introduction to electricity:
Basic concepts of electricity, the structure of an atom, energy bands, normal, excited and
ionised atom, conductors, insulators, and semiconductors,
Conducting materials
Classical free electron theory of metals: Electrical conductivity expression, drawbacks of
classical theory, Quantum free electron theory of metals: Its importance, Density of
states, Fermi-Dirac distribution function, Calculation of Fermi energy and its
importance. Superconductors: properties, Types, applications and BCS Theory (basic
idea).
Semiconducting materials:
Types of semiconductors, intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, current flow in
semiconductors. Elemental semiconductors, Types of bonding-covalent bonding;
