PROJECT TITLE: STEP-UP VOLTAGE BY USING BOOST CONVERTER

ABSTRACT :
The design and modeling of DC/DC boost (step-up) converter for Advanced Intelligent
Systems using Matlab/Simulink. The switching mechanism alternates between charging the inductor from
the input source and discharging it into the output, creating an amplified voltage. This device is widely used
in applications requiring voltage levels higher than the source can provide, such as in renewable energy
systems, automotive electronics, battery-powered devices, and portable power supplies.

TOOLSREQUIRED:

 Sim power system

Theory:
A boost converter is a DC-DC converter that steps up the input voltage to a higher output voltage
using energy storage elements and switching components. The primary components of a boost converter
include an inductor, a switching device (e.g., a MOSFET or IGBT), a diode, and a capacitor. Its operation is
based on the principles of energy conservation and inductor behavior under varying current.

Operating Principle:

The boost converter operates in two distinct modes during each switching cycle:

1. ON-State (Switch Closed):

o The switch (MOSFET) is turned on, connecting the inductor directly to the input voltage source.
o The inductor stores energy as current flows through it, generating a magnetic field.
o The diode is reverse-biased, preventing current from flowing to the output during this phase.
o The voltage across the inductor increases linearly, and the input source supplies energy only to
the inductor.
2. OFF-State (Switch Open):
o The switch is turned off, breaking the connection between the inductor and the input source.
o The energy stored in the inductor is released as it opposes the decrease in current flow.
o The inductor's voltage combines with the input voltage, forward-biasing the diode, and
transferring energyto the output capacitor and load.
o This creates a boosted output voltage higher than the input.

Mathematical Analysis:

 Voltage Gain:
The relationship between the input and output voltage is derived from the duty cycle DDD, the fraction of
the switching period TTT for which the switch is on:

Vout=Vin1−DV_{\text{out}} = \frac{V_{\text{in}}}{1 - D}Vout=1−DVin

where DDD is the duty cycle (0<D<10 < D < 10<D<1).

40
EE3013 SMPS & UPS LABORATORY MANUAL
 Inductor Current:
The inductor current ripple is calculated to ensure efficient operation and avoid saturation:

ΔIL=VinDTL\Delta I_L = \frac{V_{\text{in}} D T}{L}ΔIL=LVinDT

where LLL is the inductance and TTT is the switching period.

 Output Voltage Ripple:

The capacitor reduces voltage ripple and is chosen based on:

ΔVout=IoutDfC\Delta V_{\text{out}} = \frac{I_{out} D}{f C}ΔVout=fCIoutD

where CCC is the capacitance and fff is the switching frequency.

Output:

41
EE3013 SMPS & UPS LABORATORY MANUAL
Result:
The performance of a boost converter is typically evaluated in terms of key parameters such as output
voltage, efficiency, ripple, and transient response. When analyzing or implementing a boost converter, the
results obtained are typically centered around its performance characteristics under specific operating
conditions.
