Course code: EEEN 222

Course Title: Basic Electrical Engineering
Date: Thursday, 14th July 2016 Time: 18:00 -20:00 hours

At the top of your answer sheet write:

- ID
- Name
- Programme of study
- Course code
Time allowed: 2 hours

SECTION A: Answer ALL questions (Total: 20 marks)

Write all your answers in the answer sheet provided

Question A1 [2 marks]

Explain what is meant by an electromotive force.

Answer: It represents the driving influence that causes current to flow in an electric
circuit.

Question A2 [2 marks]

State the Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law.

Answer: At any instant in a closed loop, the algebraic sum of the e.m.f.s acting round the
loop is equal to the algebraic sum of the p.d.s round the loop.

Question A3 [2 marks]

State the Superposition theorem.

Answer: The Superposition theorem states that we can solve a circuit problem one
source at a time, finally imposing the analyses one on another.

Question A4
A stone block, having a mass of 220 kg, is hauled 120 m in 2 min
along a horizontal floor. The coefficient of friction is 0.3. Calculate
[2 marks]
(a) the horizontal force required;
(b) the work done; [1 marks]
(c) the power.
[1 marks]
Answer:
(a) Weight of stone = 220 [kg] × 9.81 [N/kg] = 2,158.2 N
∴ Force required = 0.3 x 2,158.2 [N] = 647.46 N = 647 N
(b) Work done = 647.46 [N] × 120 [m] = 77,695.2 J = 77.7 kJ
(c) Power = 77,695.2 J/ (2x60)s = 647.46 W

Question A5

The voltage and current at the terminals of the circuit element are shown in Figure
1.
a) Sketch the power versus t plot for 0 ≤ t ≥ 10 s. [3 marks]
b) Calculate the energy delivered to the circuit element at t = 1, 6, and 10 s. [2 marks]

Answer:
(a)
(b)
At 1 sec. energy is: -½*45*1 = -22.5J
At 6 sec. energy is: -45 + 2*1/2*15*1 = -30J
At 10 sec. energy is: -30 + 1/2*45*1 + 45*1 = -30 + 22.5+45 = 37.5J
Question A6

Parallel-plate capacitor with two dielectrics: A capacitor consists of two metal

plates, each 300 × 300 mm, spaced 8 mm apart. The space between the metal
plates is filled with a glass plate 5 mm thick and a layer of paper 3 mm thick. The
relative permittivities of the glass and paper are 8 and 2 respectively. Calculate [3 marks]
(a) the capacitance, neglecting any fringing flux, and
(b) the electric field strength in each dielectric in kilovolts per [2 marks]
millimetre due to a p.d. of 10 kV between the metal plates.

Note: permittivity in free space is 8.85x10-12F/m

SECTION B: Choose any TWO (2) questions (Total: 20 marks)

Write all your answers in the answer sheet provided

Question B1

Delta-Star transformation
(a) Find the values of the three colour-coded resistors. [2 marks]
(b) Draw π network which is the equivalent delta circuit and ‘T’ network
[3 marks]
which is the equivalent star circuit.
(c) For Figure B1, calculate the source current Is in the network using a $ – % [5 marks]
transformation (neglect the tolerance of the resistors).

the voltage across the capacitor and the current through the
capacitor following the closure of the switch at t = 0 on to
position 1; [2 marks]
(b) the switch is closed on to position 2 when t = 100 ms: determine
the new expressions for the capacitor voltage and current; [6 marks]
(c) plot the voltage and current waveforms for t = 0 to t = 200 ms.
