Introduction
This document provides information for link budget design for Gilat’s SkyEdge II-c system with the
intention to allow operators to make service designs based on future system capabilities.

SkyEdge II-c v5.x transmissions interoperability modes

SkyEdge II-c supports two main modes of option:

• FWD link based on DVB-S2X, and RTN link based on LDPC, or

• FWD link based on DVB-S2, and RTN link based on Turbo Coding

These are the communication specs for the various modes:

Mode FWD Link RTN Link

1 DVB-S2X Normal frame Linear MF-TDMA LDPC based: High / Low SNR
2 DVB-S2X Normal frame non-Linear MF-TDMA LDPC based: High / Low SNR
3 DVB-S2X Short frame MF-TDMA LDPC based: High / Low SNR

4 DVB-S2 Normal frame MF-TDMA: TC based 4 ATM / 2 ATM

5 DVB-S2 Short frame MF-TDMA: TC based 4 ATM / 2 ATM

SkyEdge II-c Link Performance Specifications for DVB-S2X

FWD Link (Outbound) Specifications

Topology Single broadcast carrier per network, from hub to all remote
terminals (TDM)
Carrier rates 1.5Msps up to 300Msps (v5.3) or up to 500Msps (v5.5)
Spacing factor 1.05, 1.1, 1.2
Waveform QPSK, 8PSK, 16APSK, 32APSK, 64APSK, 256APSK DVB-S2X

Notes for DVB-S2X performance tables below:

• Typically, carrier at symbol rates below 20Msps will use short DVB-S2X framing, while rates
equal or higher than 20Msps will use normal frame
• Required Quasi Error Free Es/N0 and Eb/N0 performance is defined at Frame Error Rate (FER)
= 10-5 (for AWGN channel), as specified in ETSI EN 302 307-1 V1.4.1 (2014-11)
• Spectral efficiency considers modulation, pilot insertion, FEC and framing (PL, BB headers)
• For SatMaster or similar tools, put FEC = Spectral Efficiency / Modulation Order, where
spectral efficiency appears in the tables below, and modulation order is the number of
modulated bits per symbol: 1 for BPSK, 2 for QPSK, 3 for 8PSK, etc.
• The default margin to determine the FWD modcod is 0.5dB in C band, and 1dB in Ku and Ka
bands. This margin is configurable by the system operator

BUC and typical Linear BUC / remote terminal transmitter.
back-off Typical Gilat-provided SkyEdge II-c BUCs or transceivers operate at
0.8dB back-off from saturated rating

Notes for the MF-TDMA RTN specifications for LDPC High SNR and Low SNR below:
• Required Quasi Error Free Es/N0 and Eb/N0 performance is defined at Packet Error Rate (PER)
= 10-5 (for AWGN channel)
• Spectral efficiency considers preambles, pilot insertion and FEC but not guard time
• High ModCods must be transmitted with back-off, from P1dB reference, due to peak-to-
average ratio and ACI. See the table below
• For SatMaster or similar tools, put FEC = Spectral Efficiency / Modulation Order, where
spectral efficiency appears in the tables below, and modulation order is the number of
modulated bits per symbol: 1 for BPSK, 2 for QPSK, 4 for 16QAM, etc.
• The default margin to determine the RTN modcod is 1dB. This margin is configurable by the
system operator

MF-TDMA RTN Link (Inbound) Specifications – for DVB-S2 VSATs

Topology Multi-channel / multi-frequency TDMA, bandwidth-on-demand

access – multiple remote terminals transmit simultaneously on
different RTN channels
Channel rates and 128, 160, 192, 256, 320, 384, 512, 640, 768, 1024, 1280, 1536, 2048,
waveform 2560, 3072, 4096, 5120 and 6144 Ksps.
BPSK, QPSK, 8PSK and 16QAM.
Channels may be static or dynamic, based on Gilat’s dynamic
channels algorithm
Spacing factor 1.2 (roll-off factor 0.2)
BUC and typical Linear BUC / remote terminal transmitter.
back-off Typical Gilat-provided SkyEdge II-c BUCs or transceivers operate at
0.8dB back-off from saturated rating

Notes for the MF-TDMA 4 ATM and 2 ATM performance tables below:

• Typical LBA will assume 4ATM RTN frame

• Required Quasi Error Free Es/N0 and Eb/N0 performance is defined at Packet Error Rate (PER)
= 10-5 (for AWGN channel)
• Spectral efficiency considers preambles, pilot insertion and FEC but not guard time
• 16QAM2/3, 16QAM3/4, 16QAM4/5 and 16QAM6/7 must be transmitted with back-off, from
P1dB reference, of 0.3dB, 0.5dB, 0.5dB and 1.0dB, respectively, due to peak-to-average ratio
and ACI
• For SatMaster or similar tools, put FEC = Spectral Efficiency / Modulation Order, where
spectral efficiency appears in the tables below, and modulation order is the number of
modulated bits per symbol: 1 for BPSK, 2 for QPSK, 3 for 8PSK, etc.
• The default margin to determine the RTN modcod is 1dB. This margin is configurable by the
system operator
