Test II. Problem Solving : Refer to Module of Equivalent Damping.
1. A 7 kg mass is attached to a damper with a damping coefficient of 60 Ns/m. The mass is initially moving
with a velocity of 3 m/s. In addition to the damping force, a constant external force of 20 N is applied in
the direction opposite to the motion. Calculate the total force acting on the mass at the initial velocity.
Determine how long it will take for the mass to come to rest, considering both the damping force and the
constant external force.
2. A mechanical piston system involves a 13 kg block sliding horizontally inside a cylinder. The friction force
between the piston and the cylinder wall is constant at 40 N. Initially, the block is moving at 5 m/s.
Calculate: The time it takes for the block to stop. The distance traveled before it comes to rest.
3. A steel shaft in a mechanical system experience torsional vibration. The maximum torque applied during
each cycle of vibration is 210 Nm, and the maximum angular displacement is 0.055 radians. The steel
has a hysteretic damping coefficient of η=0.023. Calculate the energy dissipated per cycle due to
hysteretic damping. If the shaft undergoes 60 vibration cycles per minute, determine the total energy
dissipated in 7 minutes.
4. Two parallel plates are separated by a 2 mm thick layer of oil with a dynamic viscosity 0.12 Pa-s. The
area of each plate is 0.07 m². The plates are moving relative to each other with a velocity of 0.2m/s.
Calculate the damping constant between the plates. Determine the damping force acting on the system
due to the fluid resistance.
5. A horizontal shaft supported by a journal bearing rotates at a constant velocity. The dynamic viscosity of
the lubricant is 0.087 Pa-s, the effective area of the bearing is 0.0021 m², and the radial clearance
between the shaft and the bearing is 0.00052 m. Calculate the damping constant of the journal bearing.
If the shaft moves with a velocity of 0.3 m/s, calculate the damping force exerted by the oil film.
