Chapter: Averages
In this chapter we will learn following,
1. Averages (Mean) meaning
2. Averages applications & Properties
3. Weighted Average (Combined Mean)
4. Average Speed
Introduction
Suppose there is a group having so many values, imagine if we represent that entire
group by a single value, this leads to concept of averages.

The basic formula for the average of n numbers n1 , n2 , n3 ,… nn is
n1 n2 n3 .... nn
Average ( An ) =
n
So total of numbers = ( An ) n.
Important Note: If there are two numbers a, b (a<b) their average lies between a
&b
only.

(a) 275 (b) 255
(c) Can’t be determined (d) None of the above
(2) Similarly, if each and every number is multiplied by some value say (k), then
average is also multiplied by same value k, so new average is (A) k
14. The average of 11 numbers is 9. If each of these 11 numbers is multiplied by 6 and then 5 is
added to each of these resultant numbers, then the new average is:
(a) 45 (b) 67 (c) 68 (d) 59
Suppose there are two sections A and B. Average marks of section A (30 students)
is 60 and average marks of section B (20 students) is 80. Find the average marks of entire
students in the two sections.
Total marks of section A = 60 x 30
Total marks of section B = 80 x 20
Total marks in A & B = 60 x 30 + 80 x 20.
Average is = [60 x 30 + 80 x 20] / (30+20) = 3400/50 = 68.
Overall average (= 68) is in between 60 and 80 only.
