Q#5. The following figure shows a cross-section of a diversion weir.

Using Khosla’s method,

compare the residual pressure at the key points for the weir profile shown in the figure.
Also calculate the value of the exit gradient.

Consider the case of no flow at pond level.

1258.5m

0.5m

1250m
1248m 1248m

Solution:
 Total length of floor = 35.5m
 Depth of U/S pile = 1256-1250 = 6m
 Depth of intermediate pile = 1255-1248 = 7m
 Depth of D/S pile = 1255-1248 = 7m
 H = 1260-1256 = 4m

Elementary profile

 b= 35.5m
U/S pile:  d1 = 6m
 α = b/d = 35.5/6 =5.917
 λ=

Intermediate pile:  b= 35.5m

 b1 = 20.5m
 b2 = 15m
 d2 = 7m

Correction of slope of the floor.

→ Correction at the U/S pile and D/S pile of C and E is Nil. Because
they situated neither at the start not at the end of any slope.
And also the correction at C on the intermediate pile nil.

→ Correction at E on the intermediate pile due to slope.

 Correction factor for 1:3 slope from table is C' = 4.5, sloping is located b' = 20.5m
 bs = Horizontal length of sloping floor = 10.5m

► Corrected values:
 Φ = φ + correction due to thickness + correction due to M. interference + correction due to slope.
 For U/S pile,

Φc' =

 For intermediate pile,

ΦE' =

Φc' =

 For D/S pile,

ΦE'=

► Residual pressure:
Total seepage head (H) = 1260m-1255m = 5m
Φ is defined as the ratio of residual head (h or p) to the total seepage head (H).
