ME103 ENGINEERING MECHANICS I

ASSIGNMENT NO 2
STATICS OF PARTICLES
1. A smooth sphere (weight , radius ) is suspended by a wire (length ) as
shown in Figure P2.1. Determine the magnitude of force in the wire.
2. The cylinders shown in Figure P2.2 have the same diameter but the cylinder ‘ ’ weighs and
cylinder ‘ ’ weighs . Find the reactions at the supports.
3. Determine the magnitude and direction of the smallest force that maintains the package shown
in Figure P2.3 in equilibrium. Note that the force exerted by the rollers on the package is perpendicular
to the incline.

4. Two cables are tied together at and are loaded as shown in Figure P2.4. Find the value of for
which the tension is as small as possible (a) in cable , (b) in both cables simultaneously. In each case
determine the tension in each cable.
5. Two cables are tied together at and are loaded as shown in Figure P2.5. It is known that the
maximum allowable tension is in cable and in cable . Determine (a) the maximum
force that can be applied at , (b) the corresponding value of .
6. The springs and , shown in Figure P2.6, each have a stiffness of and an unstretched
length of . Determine the horizontal force applied to the cord which is attached to the small ring
so that the displacement of from the wall is .
7. The gusset plate, shown in Figure P2.7, is subjected to the forces of three members. Determine the
tension force in member and its angle for equilibrium. The forces are concurrent at point . Take
.
8. Determine the forces in cables and needed to hold the ball , shown in Figure P2.8, in
equilibrium. Take and .
9. A light string whose extremity is fixed, has weights and attached to it at and . It
passes round a small smooth peg at carrying a weight of at the free end as shown in Figure

find
(a) tensions in the portion , and of the string and
(b) magnitudes of and .
10. A cylinder is hung by means of two cables and that are attached to the top of a vertical
wall as shown in Figure P2.10. A horizontal force perpendicular to the wall holds the cylinder in the
position shown. Determine the magnitude of and the tension in each cable.

11. Three cables are used to tether a balloon as shown in Figure P2.11. Knowing that the balloon exerts an
vertical force at , determine the tension in each cable.
12. A rectangular plate is supported by three cables as shown in Figure P2.12. Determine the tension in
each of the three cables knowing that the weight of the plate is .
