Problem Statement
I cannot find a shortcut Distillation “SCD” Demo model that I can use as a start point.

Solution

Purpose
Use the Shortcut Distillation feature in place of the original distillation architecture. This architecture is
driven by a shortcut distillation program that automatically constructs the necessary representative open
equations needed to predict the yields and qualities of the crude still materials. These equations are then
integrated into the XNLP matrix (xmps.mps) file.

Advantages

The original architecture does not involve executing any simulators during the course of the
optimization run. As a result, all the cut points, modes of operation, and swing cuts for the crude stills
need to be defined at matrix generation time, and they do not change during the course of the
optimization. The new architecture (referred to in the Help as shortcut distillation) replaces that
formulation with one that is dynamic and driven by a shortcut distillation simulator.
The original architecture involves the definition of swing cuts that can swing up and down the
distillation tower to represent changing cut temperatures. The qualities that swing up and down are the
average qualities for the cut; there are no gradients of quality through the swing cut. That is, if half the
swing cut swings up, it does so at the quality of the entire swing cut. The implementation of the
shortcut distillation simulator will provide for cuts that possess qualities that are consistent with the
computed distillation range and crude mix to the tower.
In the original architecture, the user specifies the yield of the (variable number of) light ends.
Typically, most models contain methane, ethane, propane, isobutane, and normal butane as identifiable
products from the crude still. In the new architecture, light ends are carried as pure components. The
tags from table MICROCUT that match the tags from table NCRDCUTS are designated as pure
components.
In the original architecture, it is very difficult to feed atmospheric bottoms from an atmospheric
distillation tower to multiple vacuum units. The new architecture allows any number of atmospheric
bottoms streams to feed any number of vacuum towers. Each feed to each vacuum tower contains all
the micro cut information from the aggregation of the micro cuts from each atmospheric tower.
