ABOUT CSIR-NATIONAL METALLURGICAL LABORATORY MADRAS CENTRE
The National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), part of CSIR's 38 labs, was founded on 21st November 1946
and inaugurated on 26th November 1950 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Envisioned by Sir Shanti Swarup
Bhatnagar, it was established with support from Tata Industries, Sir Ratan Tata Trust, and Sardar Bahadur Sir
Indra Singh. Under its first Director, Dr. Balraj Nijhawan, NML advanced with pilot plants and research aligned
with India’s Five-Year Plans. NML also operates a Centre in Chennai.

ABOUT DEPT. OF CHEMISTRY, IIT MADRAS

The IIT Madras Department of Chemistry, established in 1959, has grown to include 34 faculty, 27 staff, 100 M.Sc., and 300
Ph.D. students. Renowned nationally and internationally, it excels in teaching and research, with alumni achieving global
recognition, including IIT Madras Distinguished Alumni Awards. Research spans atmospheric, green, polymer, and quantum
chemistry, among others, supported by cutting-edge facilities like NMR, XRD, and HR-QTOF. Faculty have pioneered
centers like NCCR and MRI, addressing societal issues like water purification through nanotechnology. Students are selected
via national exams like JAM, GATE, and CSIR-UGC/JRF.
