Material Studio server setup

Dr Krishna Govender ([email protected])

• First download and install the Material Studio application that would have been provided to you
• Once your installation has completed you need to edit the following file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
The file should look something like what you see below
• Often if you make any changes to this file and try to save it you will NOT be able to
• So, copy the hosts file to your Desktop first
• Open the hosts file that is now on your Desktop with Notepad
• Add in the following:
196.24.44.123 mslogin.chpc.ac.za mslogin
• The new file should now look something like:

• Save this file, ensuring the name is still hosts

• Once saved copy the file from the Desktop back to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\
• You will get a menu showing that the destination already has a file named “hosts”.
In this case choose Replace the file in the destination
• Next, we need to bring up the Material Studio server
• Go to your Windows search bar and type in mate
• You will then get the following:
• Click on the Materials Studio 2018 Server Console. You could have Material Studio 7.0 or 2016 Server Console, depending of which
version is installed on your system.
• The following screen should appear:
• Right click on the screen that is on the righthand screen and select New > Server Gateway
• Insert the URL: mslogin.chpc.ac.za
• Choose the appropriate Port Number.
The ports are follows:
Material Studio Version Port Number
7.0 18888
2016 18890
2018 18889
• You also need to Click on Connection >>
Ensure that Use Internet Setting is selected
Timeout: 360 seconds
And all Https Settings are ticked

• Once all is completed click on Run Diagnostics

• You should see the text SUCCESS print out next to the Run Diagostics tab
• Your gateway is now setup so you can now click on OK
• For MS7.0 and MS2016 you can just go to the last two steps of this document
• ONLY in the case of MS2018 there is one additional step that needs to followed before you are ready to use the software
• After you have clicked OK you will see mslogin.chpc.ac.za_18889 under the Gateway name
• Right click on this and select Properties
• You should see something that looks like the figure below:

• Click on the Queuing tab

• In the Extra parameters: Put in -P YOURPROGRAMMESHORTNAME

• Click Apply and then click OK

• Close the server console
• Once closed you can start up the Material Studio visualizer and then setup and submit your jobs to LENGAU
