FIELD STUDY 1 LEARNING The School
EPISODE Environment

FS1 1

SPARK Your Interest

This episode 1 provides an opportunity for students to examine
and reflect on a school environment that promotes learning and
development.

TARGET Your Intended Learning Outcomes At the

end of this episode, I must be able to:

⮚ Determine the characteristics of a school environment

that is safe, secure, and is supportive of learning (PPST

2.1.1)
REVISIT the Learning Essentials
1. A physical environment conducive for learning is one that has
consistent practices that:
•Keep the school safe, clean, orderly and free
distractions; • Maintain facilities that provide
challenging activities; and
•Address the physical, social and psychological
needs of the students
2. Display boards can be powerful in communicating information
about the learning environment. They help in building and
establishing the school culture. These boards become one way
for everyone to learn about the vision-mission, goals, and
values that the school upholds.
3. As a basic part of the school’s visual environment, display
boards have four purposes:
•Decorative- They offer visual stimulation and appeal to
aesthetics. They set the social and psychological
atmosphere of the school.
•Motivational- They encourage students to perform better
and have greater confidence. An example would be the
display of students’ outputs that show that each output
is recognized and valued. The bulletin boards help
celebrate the learners’ growth and progress.
•Informational- They are used as a strategy to readily
disseminate information.
• Instructional- They move students to respond and
participate
through interactive displays. They get students to think about
and communicate their learning.
4. The set of criteria for evaluating bulletin board displays
includes effective communication, attractiveness, balance,
unity, interactivity, legibility, correctness, and durability.

Activity 1.1 Exploring the School Campus

Resource Teacher: Kristine S. Bustarga Teacher signature:
Grade/Year Level: 7 Subject Area: Science 7

To realize the Intended Learning Outcome, work my way through

these steps: 1. Visit a school. Look into facilities and support
learning areas in the campus, then in the classroom.
2. Observe and use the checklist as you move around
the school premises.
3. Analyze your gathered data about the school environment.
4. Reflect on the characteristics of a school
environment that promotes learning.
5. Present your idea of a good school environment
through any of these:
a) Descriptive paragraph b) Photo essay
c) Sketch or drawing d) Poem, song or rap

As you move around the campus, observations forms

are provided for you to document your observations. It is
advised that you read the entire worksheet before
proceeding to the school site. A good understanding of the
activities and tasks to be accomplished in the
activity sheets will yield better learning results.

•There is a big quadrangle with, a small stage in the center of
Laboratory High School.
•The classroom is clean but I noticed that some of the grills already have
rusts.
•The comfort rooms are accessible. However not all toilets are
functional. • There is a small store/canteen inside the laboratory
High School. • There is a computer Laboratory for the students and
faculty. • The faculty room is well ventilated.
•The hallways are clean and tiled.
•Overall, the school is a safe space for learning. The facilities are
accessible and materials/equipment are functional. The school is
conducive to learning which matters the most.

How do the school campus and the classroom in particular

impact the learning of the students going to school? What are
your conclusions?
It was concluded that the school campus is a place for
students to grow and develop themselves and their
knowledge according to the education applied, and students
are able to have potential in the academic and non-academic
fields. The school campus environment, teacher/lecturer's
role and differences in race, ethnicity, culture, social class of
students impact learning of the students going to school.

How does this relate to your knowledge of child and adolescent

development/ How does this relate to your knowledge of
facilitating learning?
A child needs a conducive learning environment for an
effective and productive learning. Teenagers are at a
critical emotional, psychological development
stage. It is at this stage that anyone can leave
a deep impression to their
lifelong development socially, personally and to
the community.
As teacher, we can be humble enough to extend our
patience longer, understand their change physically,
emotionally and psychologically, provide support and
understanding, teach the appropriate action and reaction
to a situation, share our experience and our emotional
maturity, point to the right direction in a professional
teacher approach to a student, student-teacher interaction

1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just

observed? Why? Why not?

Yes, I would like to do that because the educational

environment I just saw is so favorable to teaching. The
environment is really welcoming, cozy, and serene. The
school has access to a wide range of resources.
Administrators, including teachers, offer a lot of flexibility.
That could make my engaging instruction even better.

2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning?

In my opinion, a school can be deemed favorable to

learning if it includes all the amenities that the
students will need and appreciate. More opportunities
for pupils to practice and assess their knowledge and
abilities

3. What kind of classroom is conducive to learning?

One of the major components of a conducive learning

environment. Having a comfortable physical space where
children are able to sit comfortably, see and understand what
their teacher is saying, as well as socialise with their fellow
classmates one of the major components of a conducive
learning environment.

4. In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in

number 3?

The characteristics of a classroom conductive to learning is:

first it
needs to have a proper ventilation system so that the
students won’t feel irritated and hot while
studying, second it has to have proper lighting so that
students feel energized in studying also a classroom that
is dark will promote boredom in class and lastly is the
quite yet relaxing environment, students can concentrate
in studying if he place is noisy and in chaos. The most
important thing is the students being comfortable in a
space and they can enjoy studying.

5. Write your additional learnings and insights here.

Environment can give you learnings. However, learning can be

disturbed by environment, thus, make sure that we surround
our learners with orderly and free from distractions
environment especially when learning processes. Environment
motivates learning to be achievable by providing a safe,
informative, and motivating facilities.

Activity 1.2 Observing Bulletin Board Displays

Resource Teacher: Kristine S. Bustarga Teacher’s signature:
Grade/Year Level: 7 Subject Area: Science 7
The display board, or what we more commonly refer to as bulletin
board, is one of the most readily available and versatile learning
resources.

To achieve the Intended Learning Outcomes, work your way through

these steps: l. Examine for bulletin board displays. Include samples
of those found at the entrance, lobby, hallways and classrooms. 2.
Pick one and evaluate the display. 3. Propose enhancements to
make the display more effective.

As you look around and examine board displays, use observation

guide and forms provided for you to document your observations.

An Observation Guide for BOARD DISPLAYS

Read the following carefully before you observe.

1. Go around the school and examine board displays. How

many board displays do you see?

The school has seven bulletin boards; two of them are in

the lobby, and the remaining five are placed in each of
the classrooms. Eight displays make up the majority of
the bulletin
board (excluding supplemental and border patterns),
and they are categorized as both a notice and a class
update.

2. Where are the display boards found? Are they in places

where target viewers can see them?

Some of the school's bulletin boards are inside the

classroom buildings, while the major one is outside the
main entrance. The boards' positions make them simple
to find and effective at spreading information.

3. What are the displays about? What key messages do they

convey? What images and colors do you see? How are the
pieces of information and images arranged?

There are two separate board displays. developments at

school and announcements. The application for school
journalism, a uniform guide, and advisers' names
organized by grade level are all listed under the
announcements.

- The board displays' primary hues are green, yellow, and

red.

- The school calendar, a copy of the memo, and a list

of the winners from the just finished intramurals are all
included under the school announcement.

4. What materials were used in making the displays? Are borders

used?

All the board designs are made of art/colored papers cut in

different shapes and bond papers. The board is bordered with
paper arts

5. Do you notice some errors? (misspelled words, grammar

inconsistencies and the like)

The main bulletin board, in terms of content is a very

good one. It is free from errors and inconsistencies; the
announcements are also up to date

6. Are the messages clear and easily understood?

Yes, the messages are clear and are written using words that
students can easily understand

7. Think about what got your attention. Why did it get your
attention?
What caught our attention is the way it is secured by a glass
protection. This makes the displays away from being vandalized
or ripped off.

8. Take a photos of the display boards (if allowed)

Based on the questions on the observation guide, write your
observation report.
Observation REPORT
(You may paste your picture of the display
here)

There are seven bulletin boards in the school, the two main
bulletins are located outside school buildings while the rest are at
every classroom. The bulletin board that was observed and
evaluated is the one located in the entrance area. After evaluating
its contents, location, and attractiveness, we must say that it is an
example of excellent bulletin board. It is located in an area and
level where students can easily access, it has a glass protection,
the contents are clear, updated, and free from errors, and lastly, it
was bordered and designed with colorful paper arts which make
an eye-catcher.

Board Title: Campus Bulletin

Rationale: The Laboratory High School (LHS) is a private high school

unit of Central Bicol State University of Agriculture. This school is
located at barangay San Jose, Pili, Camarines Sur. This school has
Junior High School only from grade 7-10. Disseminating information
is a difficult task, especially when the target audience comes from
different level or departments. However, with a board displays
making effective announcement is easier. Board displays can
provide a convenience, effectiveness and engagement. It also
ensures that the information is conveyed to a large number of
people. The school’s enhanced board display aims to improve the
existing board display in terms of design, lay
out and information organization in order to attract more viewers.
Objectives:
•To improve the existing board display of the school
•To change the design/lay-out of the existing
board display • To add more creative elements
on the board display
Best features of my proposed bulletin enhancement:
•Attractive- with its youthful design and creative use of
materials, my board display looks interesting and eye-
catcher
•Effective communication- with its new lay-out, the information
posted will be easily conveyed
•Balance- in terms of spacing, colors and sizes of the
elements, the board display looks organized, balanced
and arranged
Content Resources (Name each needed resource and give each a brief
description):
•Corkboard- as the main skeleton which will hold every
element of the board
•Cartolina- the background of the whole board
•Colored papers/cut-out patterned papers- as the
background of the labels • Printed labels- these will classify
the info/materials posted
•Pictures- for enhancement
•Glue/adhesive tape, push pin- to attach the materials.
Materials for aesthetic enhancement:
The following are the materials to be used for aesthetic
enhancement: colored paper, cartolina, pictures, cut-out/patterned
paper, decorative stickers and tapes.
1. Name at least five skills that a teacher should have to be able to
come up with effective board displays. Elaborate on why each skill
is needed.

• Visual Skill- teachers looks like interior designers they must

be able to visualize the presentation.

• Communication skill- the teachers should know the words

to combined with visual content and communicate more than
words alone.

• Resourcefulness- teachers will be able to come up with an

effective board display using the available resources at hand. •
Creativity- the creative teachers try to present concepts and
content in an interesting way and try to create something
differently.

• Critical thinking- analyze, evaluate and reflect on the

concept about the information to be posted

2. Which of the skills you named in #1 do you already have? Recall

your past experiences in making board displays. How do you
practice these skills?

•The skills that I already have are resourcefulness and

creativity. In my past experience in making board display way
back in high school with my teachers, they told me that they
like the way I create my own board display and other
projects. I practice these skills through making a simple
scrapbook and journals.

3. Which skills do you still need to develop? What concrete steps will
you take on how you can improve on or acquire these skills.

• The skill I still need to develop is communication skill. I need to

practice this skill because I’m not good in it. Also, because I
have a fear in public speaking that’s why I want to develop it
for myself. The steps I will do to improve this skill is through
practice myself in communicating or socializing to others.
