HW #9

Note for all questions: Assume that a planar rolling couple allows sliding.

Question 1

Determine the number of degrees of freedom for each of the following mechanisms.

Question 2
of Determine the number
degrees of freedom for
each of the following
.mechanisms
Question 3
.Determine the number of degrees of freedom for each of the following mechanisms
HW #10
Question 1
In the following transmission the input shaft rotates at 1000rpm counterclockwise
when viewed from the right. Gears 8 and 12 are fixed. The input shaft is attached to
gear 1 and the output shaft is attached to gear 17.

1. How many teeth in gear 11?

2. What is the rotational speed of the output shaft?

Question 2

In the following transmission the input shaft rotates at 1200rpm counterclockwise

when viewed from the right. The input shaft is attached to gear 5 and the output
shaft is attached to gear 8. Gear 4 has internal teeth and only the half of it which
comes in contact another gear is presented in the figure. All gears have a modulus of
2.5mm and a pressure angle of 22°.

1. How many teeth in gears 6 and 7?

2. Determine the rotational speed of the output shaft.

Question 3

For the transmission

described in the figure,
the modulus of all gears
is 3mm:
1. Determine the
transmission ratio as
a function of the
number of teeth of
the gears.
2. The number of teeth
for each gear is
given: Z1=18, Z4=60, Z5=36, Z6=46, Z7=10.
a. Find the number of teeth for gears 2 and 3.
b. Find the required vertical distance between the input and output
shafts.

HW #11
Question 1
The motion of the follower is presented in the diagram. The cam rotates at 400rpm.
1. Find the maximal acceleration of the follower (magnitude).
2. Find the minimal radius for the base circle of the cam if the allowed pressure
angle is 30º.
3. What is the largest allowed radius for the roller?

Question 2

In the cam mechanism described in figure A, gear 1 rotates at 1200rpm and is

driving gear 2 which is rigidly attached to the cam. The followers motion is described
in diagram B. The number of teeth in the gears are Z1 = 18, Z2 = 45.
1. Find the maximal magnitude of the acceleration of the follower.
2. Find the minimal allowed base circle radius for an allowed pressure angle of
30º.
3. Determine the contact ratio in the gear transmission in case the distance
between the centers of the gears is 2mm larger than the design distance. The
gears have a modulus of 3mm and a pressure angle of 20°. Is the contact
ratio acceptable?
