INTRODUCTION

Facebook was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his roommates

which are: Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. It was
originally launched as an only social network at the college where Mark and his
friends used to study, however, it quickly expanded to include users of all ages
and countries.
In 2006, Facebook opened up its platform to developers, which led to the
creation of a wide range of third-party applications. This made Facebook more
popular, and it soon became one of the most visited websites in the world.
In 2007, Facebook launched its advertising platform, which allowed
businesses to target users with ads based on their demographics and interests.
This was a major turning point for Facebook, as it allowed the company to
generate significant revenue.
In 2012, Facebook acquired Instagram, a popular photo-sharing app. This
acquisition gave Facebook a foothold in the mobile market and helped it to reach
a younger audience.
In 2014, Facebook acquired WhatsApp, a popular messaging app. This
acquisition further strengthened Facebook's position in the mobile market and
gave it access to a large user base in developing countries.
Over the time, this platform was growing until it become what is now, and
as a matter of fact, today, Facebook is one of the most popular websites in the
world. It has over 2.9 billion active users and is used by people of all ages and
from all walks of life.

also made it possible for people to connect with others who share their interests,
even if they live far away.

their consent, and of sharing this data with third parties.
Spread of misinformation: Facebook has been used to spread
misinformation and propaganda. False and misleading information can spread
quickly on Facebook, and it can be difficult for users to distinguish what is true

Facebook use to addiction and mental health problems. Spending too much time
on Facebook can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness.
Political polarization: Facebook has been accused of contributing to
political polarization. The platform's algorithms can create echo chambers, where
users are only exposed to content that confirms their existing beliefs. This can

7
lead to increased division and conflict between people with different political
views.
Cyberbullying and harassment: Facebook has been used as a platform
for cyberbullying and harassment. Users can anonymously post hurtful or
threatening messages to others, and victims of cyberbullying may feel isolated
and alone.
Hate speech and discrimination: Facebook has been criticized for not
doing enough to combat hate speech and discrimination on its platform. Users
have been able to post hateful and discriminatory content, which can create a
hostile environment for marginalized groups.
Overall, Facebook has had a significant impact on society, both positive
and negative. The platform has made it easier for people to stay connected with
friends and family, communicate with others, and access information.
However, Facebook has also been criticized for its handling of user data,
the spread of misinformation, and its potential to contribute to addiction, mental
health problems, political polarization, and cyberbullying. It is important for users
to be aware of both the positive and negative impacts of Facebook and to use
the platform wisely. Users should take steps to protect their privacy, be critical of
the information they see on Facebook, and use the platform in a way that is
healthy for their mental well-being.

8

that has had a significant impact on the way people communicate and interact
