Exercises on Clutch Design
1. A multi disc clutch, steel on bronze is to transmit 4.5 kW at 750 rpm. The inner radius of contact is 40 mm and outer radius is 70 mm. The clutch operates in oil with an expected coefficient of friction of 0.1. The average allowable pressure is 0.35 N/mm2. Find the total number of steel on bronze discs, the axial actual force required, the actual average pressure and maximum pressure. Make a neat free hand sketch of the assembled coupling showing the arrangement of disks. 2. Determine the principal dimensions of cone clutch required to transmit 30 kW at 750 rpm from an electric motor to an air compressor. Take design consideration of: • Semi angle of cone = 12.5 • Load factor = 1.75 • Coefficient of friction µ= 0.2 • Mean diameter to face width ratio = 6 • Mean diameter of cone = 6 to 10 d where d is • Allowable shear stress for shaft material = 42 diameter of the shaft. N/mm2 • Allowable pressure on friction material = 0.075 to 0.1 N/mm2 3. A cone clutch with asbestos friction lining transmits 30 kW at 500 rpm. The coefficient of friction is 0.2 and the permissible pressure intensity is 0.35 N/mm2. The semi cone angle is 12.5o. The outer diameter is fixed at 300 mm for space limitations. Assuming uniform wear theory, calculate: a) The inner diameter. b) Face width of friction lining. c) Force required engaging clutch. 4. A centrifugal clutch is to be designed to transmit 15 kW at 900 rpm. The shoes are 4 in number. The speed at which the engagement begins is ¾ of the running speed. The inside radius of the pulley rim is 150mm, and coefficient of friction for the lining material is 0.25. Determine the mass and size of shoes. Assume intensity of pressure on the shoes as 0.1 N/mm2. 5. An automotive-type clutch, as shown in Figure 18.2, has inside and outside diameters of 160 and 240 mm, respectively. Clamping force is provided by nine springs, each compressed 5 mm to give a force of 900 N when the clutch is new. The molded friction material provides a conservatively estimated coefficient of friction of 0.40 when in contact with the flywheel and pressure plate. Maximum engine torque is 280 N # m. (a) What is the safety factor with respect to slippage of a brand new clutch? (b) What is the safety factor after “initial wear” has occurred? (c) How much wear of the friction material can take place before the clutch will slip (assuming no change in coefficient of friction)? 6. A single plate clutch used to drive a rotor from the motor shaft has the following data: Internal diameter of the plate = 200 mm, External diameter of the plate = 240 mm, Spring force pressing the plates = 600 N, Mass of the rotor = 1200 kg, Radius of gyration of the rotor = 200 mm, Mass of motor armature and shaft = 750 kg, Radius of gyration of motor and shaft = 220 mm, Coefficient of friction = 0.32. Both sides of the plate are effective. The driving motor is brought to a speed of 1260 rpm and then suddenly the current is switched off and the clutch is engaged. Determine (i) the final speed of the rotor and the motor and the time to attain this speed (ii) the kinetic energy lost during slipping (iii) the slipping time, if a constant resisting torque of 64 N.m exists on the armature shaft. (iv) the slipping time if instead of a resisting torque, a constant driving torque of 64 N.m exists on the armature shaft.
