Assignment: Write down your own experiences of learning second (foreign) language(s)

While writing your experiences of learning L2 clarify them according to following questions:

1. How information in L2 is processed and learned by you?

2. How you feel towards L2 information, people, objects, actions and thoughts?

3. How you use your will and freedom to make choices that result in your new behaviors?

For me, learning a language is a complicated process. It is different from learning other

subjects. It involves a lot of practices and follow up. When I talk about my personal

experience, I would say that I have a rich experience in learning English as a second

language. English was taught to me for ten years starting from grade seven till graduation

from university. After graduation, I felt that I should improve my language skills. Therefore,

I did a lot of efforts personally to increase my fluency. Until now I still learn the language.

Indeed, learning a language takes a lifetime.

I started learning English as a second language when I was in first intermediate. I still

remember my first classes and my first teachers. I remember that my teachers changed

frequently in the first year but all of them have much in common. All of them used grammar

translation method. They used to write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students,

were asked to copy these lists and memorize them by heart. All teaching concentrated on

reading and writing skills, but there were no activities concentrating on speaking or listening.

In addition, grammar rules were taught in that stage of learning the language as mathematics

equations, and we were asked to memorize the rules. The first time I didn’t pay attention to
the learning English language as I my mother wanted me to do doctor. Later both of us

understood that the profession doctor is not for me and suddenly started to seek another

profession for me. And came to decision that being English teacher would be better for me .

For that time I couldn’t find any teacher who could teach me additionally and prepete me

for the test. Because, at that time there weren’t a few teachers who knew the English

language very well. Finally, I entered the university and I took part philology group where

every student knew the English language besides me. It was so awful when I couldn’t

introduce, even, about myself because the teacher asked us to introduce about ourselves. But

I worked hard, I spent most tome in the library, read many books, found native speakers

whom I shared with my learned words. It was so difficult to pass exams while my group

mates did easier. At the end I won all these difficulties and could learn and use the

knowledge in my life.

Grammar has always been an important issue in second and foreign language learning and

teaching. Some hold the view that grammar is not essential for second/foreign language

learning and therefore have a ‘zero position’ regarding grammar teaching. And I had very

high position about learning the English by grammar. And I can say that grammar is my

lovely side learning of second languageOf course, there are certain defects or gaps in my

knowledge or ability to use the English language like using idioms and the appropriateness of

some vocabulary. Idioms have many connotations and denotations in the English language.

Sometimes I use an idiom and I mean something, but the connotation of the idiom means

something else. Another gap of my knowledge of the language is the appropriateness of

using certain vocabulary. English language entails high sense of using the appropriate word

for describing or narrating something.

When I started work at the school the head of school gave a task to take part study and

complete the knowledge as a teacher. So, I went to complete my knowledge. It helped me to


feel comfortable and I liked take part such kind of studies. The most important qualification

was studying the TKT CLIL. There I learned many thing especially grammar and many new

words also. As a school teacher I take part many seminars, couching, meetings and so on.All
