1. Scope
This procedure applies to all Vernier Calipers used within the facility to ensure re-
liable measurement accuracy.
2. Introduction
Vernier callipers are mainly used to measure the outer and inner size of parts.
Their main construction types are shown in Fig.1
3. Calibration Conditions
The temperature of the room must be in the range of (20±3) °C and (20±5) °C
and Humidity 50 ±10%
4. Calibration method
By eyesight
6. Calibration procedure:
6.1 Preparation:
Clean the Vernier Caliper and calibration gauge blocks with a lint-free cloth
and isopropyl alcohol.
Ensure the calibration environment meets the required temperature and
humidity conditions.
Visually inspect the Vernier Caliper for any physical damage, burrs, or
other defects. Report if any abnormalities are found.
1. Place the gauge block between the jaws of the Vernier Caliper.
2. Gently close the jaws onto the gauge block without applying excessive force.
3. Record the measurement shown on the Vernier Caliper.
4. Compare the measured value with the nominal value of the gauge block.
5. Calculate the error using the formula:
Error = Measured Value - Nominal Value
6. Repeat steps 1- 5 for the internal jaws and depth gauge, using appropriate
calibration standards.
7. Measure the same dimension multiple times to ensure repeatability.
8. Document any variations between readings.
2. Check the battery condition of the Digital Vernier Caliper to ensure consistent
performance.
3. Replace the battery if the display is dim or fluctuating.
4. Record any deviations or issues in the calibration report.
7. Acceptance Criteria:
1. The maximum permissible error (MPE) should align with the manufacturer’s
specifications or applicable standards (e.g., ISO 13385-1).
2. If the Digital Vernier Caliper does not meet the acceptance criteria, label it as
“Out of Tolerance” and remove it from service until repaired or replaced.
8. Calibration Frequency
Conduct calibration annually or as required based on the frequency of
use and criticality of measurements.
9. Documentation:
Record calibration data in the Calibration Log Sheet.
Maintain traceability records for the gauge blocks used.
Issue a calibration certificate or report, including:
Instrument details (e.g., make, model, serial number).
Calibration date and next due date.
Environmental conditions.
Name and signature of the person performing the calibration.
