MSIS EVENT WRITE-UP

1.) Adobe Summit TCS Talks Tech:


I really enjoyed listening to this event. The two main hosts have a jovial manner and curiosity
that made it easy to become engaged in their topic. I hold a slight bias against A.I, so this was a
really interesting topic to explore for me. In episode 1 they were debating what actions may be
“too far” for an A.I to take. I am someone who would be bothered by even a small amount of A.I
personalization, as I already dislike targeted advertising and would dislike it even more on a
larger scale. That said, I thought the following quote as a litmus test was very interesting. John
O’Leary said “It feels right to me if I’m getting value from it” and provided the example of A.I
data mining to know he likes hiking and offering a discount. I think I’d agree with this, but I tend
to agree with the other host, Andrew, who said “but marketers are trying to create these
experiences so they can upsell, right? Not discount their products.” Another main point they
made that I thought was noteworthy was the idea of using A.I to ease life, rather than make
something flashy. Essentially, rather than creating larger than life experiences, use A.I to get rid
of the friction of daily life (time to check in to a hotel, ect).
I listened to all 8 episodes, and will summarize a few key bullet point insights from what I heard:

● A.I isn’t going to replace you, people who know how to utilize A.I will replace you

● Healthcare applications of A.I like hospital bed matching, trends in epidemiology, ect
● Half the time to match patients and treatments– life saving applications of A.I
● A.I can be an art and science mix, and works best with a human centric view.
● “What does it mean to the customer? If you start from that angle you have a better
chance of making a successful career” - Kumar Vanapalli
● “The ideal A.I should be extremely boring. In other words, it’s just working behind the
scenes… You shouldn’t even have to think about it.” - Joe McKendrick
● A.I’s presence in the market is over estimated– only about 4% of surveyed executives
are using it.
● A.I “Making better decisions faster”
● Let A.I handle tedium, so humans can handle creativity
● A.I can deliver big info in small ways for humans to process
● 40% of marketers using A.I for content generation
● Another job that will be created is someone in charge of the ethical use of A.I in your
company
● A.I allows for 1-on-1 marketing engagement (implications for non-profit work, exciting!)
2.) Meeting with Darrin Bartunek
I met with Darrin Bartunek on Oct.29th. This meeting was really useful! He gave me general
guidance and help with resources on finding and internships. Additionally he helped me address
a professional question I had in regards to a job opportunity that seemed to be stalling. His
advice was really helpful in knowing what to do, and help me get a more concrete timeline from
my prospective employer!

3.) Design Principles Workshop


I attended the design principles workshop hosted at the UofU/SLCC campus in Harriman. It was
run by Tamara Castillo. I learned the 7 key principles of design and we talked about how they
can apply to the work I want to do! It was a really interesting discussion and I learned a lot of
valuable things. The 7 principles include:

1.) Balance

2.) Contrast

3.) Alignment

4.) Repetition

5.) Proximity

6.) Color theory

7.) Typography

I checked in at the event using the U of U check in system. I also took this photo of the opening
slide.
4.) Follow up events scheduled as a result of design workshop
During the workshop I discussed my career goals of social impact consulting and Tamara had a
couple of great resource for me.
-First, she introduced me to a professor who has done social impact work and we set up an
informational interview so I can learn more about her path.
-Then Tamara asked if I would be interested in helping run a social impact design contest for
teens in the spring! I said yes and we exchanged contact info so I can volunteer to help with
that.
-Lastly, she introduced me to the Adobe Certified Professional badging program that we have
access to as students and recommended I complete the “Data Storytelling” certification badge. I
spent about an hour and got halfway through that and will complete it tomorrow!
