Title: Report on Hospital Laboratory Visit

Introduction:
As part of my internship as a biomedical engineer, I had the opportunity to visit various sections of
the hospital laboratory on 4th of July 2024. This report details the experiences and observations from
the visit, focusing on the receipt and inspection of a new centrifuge machine, as well as the overall
functionality and design of the laboratory under the guidance of Sir Shumail.

Receiving and Inspecting the Centrifuge Machine:

Upon receiving the centrifuge machine manufactured by Oni Lab USA, we conducted a thorough
inspection to ensure all components and accessories were included as listed. The inspection checklist
included:
 Centrifuge machine body
 Rotors
 Sample holders
 Power cables and connectors
 User manual and safety guidelines
Everything was present except for the rotor wrench. We promptly informed the manufacturer, and
they assured us that the missing part would be provided soon.

Installation and Functionality Check:

After inspection, we proceeded to the laboratory to install and test the centrifuge machine. The setup
process was straightforward, and we verified that the machine was functioning correctly. During this
process, we observed various other machines used for laboratory tests, including:
 A refrigerator for blood storage, essential for preserving samples at the correct temperature.
 Automated analyzers for biochemical and hematological testing.
 Safety equipment like fume hoods and biosafety cabinets.
Additionally, there were many more machines and equipment that play crucial roles in various
laboratory tests and procedures.

Blood Bank Visit:

Following the installation, we visited the blood donation room. This room was equipped with:
 Comfortable beds for donors.
 An apheresis machine that continuously moves blood to prevent coagulation.
 A refrigerator for blood storage to ensure the collected blood remains viable.
 Three types of bins for waste segregation: biohazard, sharps, and general waste.
The instructor elaborated on the basic design principles for setting up a laboratory blood bank in a
hospital, including the importance of proper workflow, equipment placement, and safety protocols.
Besides the mentioned equipment, there were several other machines and tools essential for the
efficient operation of the blood donation room.
Pacific Water Engineers Machine:
Next, we visited a location where a Pacific Water Engineers machine was installed. Here, we
observed the use of solenoids in the machine's connection. This machine plays a critical role in water
purification and management within the lab, ensuring that all processes use high-quality,
contaminant-free water. Many other devices and components associated with the water purification
process were also present.

Hematology Lab Visit:

We then proceeded to the hematology lab, which was divided into two sections: chemistry and
hematology.
 In the chemistry portion, we saw:
 Refrigerators containing catalyzers and chemicals used in machines.
 Automated chemistry analyzers performing a wide range of tests such as liver function tests,
kidney function tests, and lipid profiles.
 Centrifuge machines used for separating blood components.
 Water baths for maintaining samples at a constant temperature.
In addition to the listed equipment, there were many more machines and tools essential for
conducting various biochemical tests.
 In the hematology portion, we observed:
 Automated hematology analyzers conducting complete blood counts (CBCs) and other blood
tests.
 A water bath designed to prevent blood coagulation by gently shaking tubes containing blood.
 Microscopes for examining blood smears and identifying cellular abnormalities.
This section also housed various other devices critical for comprehensive hematological analysis.

Histology Lab Visit:

Our next stop was the histology lab, where we observed:
 Tissue processors that prepare samples for microscopic examination by dehydrating, clearing,
and embedding tissues.
 Isothermal microscopes used for examining stained tissue sections to diagnose diseases.
 A dedicated area for cutting tissue samples using microtomes.
In addition to these, there were many more pieces of equipment involved in the detailed examination
and processing of tissues.

Microbiology Lab Visit:

Lastly, we visited the microbiology lab, where numerous machines were actively being used by
experts for various analyses. Key equipment observed included:
 Incubators for growing microbial cultures at controlled temperatures.
 Autoclaves for sterilizing equipment and media.
 Microscopes for identifying microorganisms through various staining techniques.
 Safety cabinets for handling infectious samples to prevent contamination.
This lab was filled with many other specialized instruments essential for microbiological testing and
analysis. This visit was conducted under the supervision and instructions of Sir Shumail, who
provided valuable insights into the operations and importance of each section.

Conclusion:
The visit to the hospital laboratory was an enriching experience that provided valuable insights into
the various diagnostic processes and the role of biomedical engineers in maintaining and optimizing
laboratory equipment. The exposure to real-world laboratory settings and advanced diagnostic
equipment has significantly contributed to my professional development and prepared me for future
challenges in the field of biomedical engineering. I am grateful to Sir Shumail and the hospital staff
for their guidance and support during this visit.
