‫‪The individual in an Islamic Society‬‬

‫‪The character traits that Islam wants to develop in its followers are reflected in‬‬
‫‪various chapters of the holy Quran. Some of these are mentioned in the following‬‬
‫‪Ayaat.‬‬

‫‪Sura 25 Al Furqan Ayaat 63 - 74‬‬


‫َأْل‬
‫َوِع َباُد الَّر ْح َمٰـِن اَّلِذيَن َيْمُش وَن َعَلى ا ْر ِض َهْوًنا َوِإَذا َخاَطَبُهُم‬
‫﴾اْلَج اِهُلوَن َقاُلوا َس اَل ًما ﴿‪٦٣‬‬
‫﴾َواَّلِذيَن َيِبيُتوَن ِلَر ِّبِهْم ُس َّجًدا َوِقَياًما ﴿‪٦٤‬‬
‫َواَّلِذيَن َيُقوُلوَن َر َّبَنا اْصِرْف َعَّنا َعَذاَب َج َهَّنَم ۖ ِإَّن َعَذاَبَها َكاَن َغَر اًما‬
‫﴾﴿‪٦٥‬‬
‫﴾ِإَّنَها َس اَءْت ُمْس َتَقًّر ا َوُمَقاًما ﴿‪٦٦‬‬
‫َواَّلِذيَن ِإَذا َأنَفُقوا َلْم ُيْس ِرُفوا َوَلْم َيْقُتُر وا َوَكاَن َبْيَن َذٰ‌ِلَك َقَواًما ﴿‬
‫﴾‪٦٧‬‬

‫َواَّلِذيَن اَل َيْدُعوَن َمَع الَّلِه ِإَلٰـًها آَخ َر َواَل َيْقُتُلوَن الَّنْفَس اَّلِتي َح َّر َم‬
‫﴾الَّلُه ِإاَّل ِباْلَح ِّق َواَل َيْز ُنوَن ۚ َوَمن َيْفَعْل َذٰ‌ِلَك َيْلَق َأَثاًما ﴿‪٦٨‬‬
‫﴾ُيَضاَعْف َلُه اْلَعَذاُب َيْوَم اْلِقَياَمِة َوَيْخ ُلْد ِفيِه ُمَهاًنا ﴿‪٦٩‬‬
‫ُأ‬
‫ِإاَّل َمن َتاَب َوآَمَن َوَعِمَل َعَماًل َصاِلًح ا َف وَلٰـِئَك ُيَبِّدُل الَّلُه َس ِّيَئاِتِهْم‬
‫﴾َح َس َناٍت ۗ َوَكاَن الَّلُه َغُفوًر ا َّر ِح يًما ﴿‪٧٠‬‬
‫﴾َوَمن َتاَب َوَعِمَل َصاِلًح ا َفِإَّنُه َيُتوُب ِإَلى الَّلِه َمَتاًبا ﴿‪٧١‬‬
‫﴾َواَّلِذيَن اَل َيْش َهُدوَن الُّز وَر َوِإَذا َمُّر وا ِبالَّلْغِو َمُّر وا ِكَر اًما ﴿‪٧٢‬‬
‫﴾َواَّلِذيَن ِإَذا ُذِّكُر وا ِبآَياِت َر ِّبِهْم َلْم َيِخ ُّر وا َعَلْيَها ُصًّما َوُعْمَياًنا ﴿‪٧٣‬‬
‫َواَّلِذيَن َيُقوُلوَن َر َّبَنا َهْب َلَنا ِمْن َأْز َواِج َنا َوُذِّر َّياِتَنا ُقَّر َة َأْعُيٍن َواْجَعْلَنا‬
‫﴾ِلْلُمَّتِقيَن ِإَماًما ﴿‪٧٤‬‬
I. They walk on earth in humility.
II. When the ignorant address them they say, “peace”.
III. They spend their nights in adoration of their Lord, prostrating and
standing.
IV. They seek the protection of Allah (SWT) from the wrath of Hell.
V. They hold a just balance while spending. They are neither
extravagant nor niggardly.
VI. They do not invoke any other god beside Allah (SWT).
VII. They do not take any life except for just cause.
VIII. They do not commit fornication.
IX. They do not witness any falsehood.
X. They pass by futility with dignity (avoiding it).
XI. When signs / verses of Allah (SWT) are before them they do not act
as deaf or the blind.
XII. They ask from Allah ----- “Our Lord; Grant us wives and offspring who
will be the comfort of our eyes and give us (the grace) to lead the
righteous.

Sura 49, Al Hujraat, Ayaat 9 - 15


‫َأ‬
‫َوِإن َطاِئَفَتاِن ِمَن اْلُمْؤِمِنيَن اْقَتَتُلوا َف ْصِلُح وا َبْيَنُهَما ۖ َفِإن َبَغْت‬
ۚ ‫ِإْحَداُهَما َعَلى اُأْلْخ َرٰى َفَقاِتُلوا اَّلِتي َتْبِغي َحَّتٰى َتِفيَء ِإَلٰى َأْمِر الَّلِه‬
‫َأ‬ ‫َأ‬
‫َفِإن َفاَءْت َف ْصِلُح وا َبْيَنُهَما ِباْلَعْدِل َو ْقِس ُطوا ۖ ِإَّن الَّلَه ُيِح ُّب‬
‫﴾اْلُمْقِسِطيَن ﴿‪٩‬‬
‫َأ‬ ‫َأ‬
‫ِإَّنَما اْلُمْؤِمُنوَن ِإْخ َوٌة َف ْصِلُح وا َبْيَن َخ َوْيُكْم ۚ َواَّتُقوا الَّلَه َلَعَّلُكْم‬
‫﴾ُتْر َح ُموَن ﴿‪١٠‬‬
‫َيا َأُّيَها اَّلِذيَن آَمُنوا اَل َيْس َخ ْر َقْوٌم ِّمن َقْوٍم َعَس ٰى َأن َيُكوُنوا َخ ْيًر ا‬
‫ِّمْنُهْم َواَل ِنَس اٌء ِّمن ِّنَس اٍء َعَس ٰى َأن َيُكَّن َخ ْيًر ا ِّمْنُهَّن ۖ َواَل َتْلِمُز وا‬
‫َأنُفَس ُكْم َواَل َتَناَبُز وا ِباَأْلْلَقاِب ۖ ِبْئَس ااِل ْسُم اْلُفُس وُق َبْعَد اِإْليَماِن ۚ ‬
‫﴾َوَمن َّلْم َيُتْب َفُأوَلٰـِئَك ُهُم الَّظاِلُموَن ﴿‪١١‬‬
‫َيا َأُّيَها اَّلِذيَن آَمُنوا اْج َتِنُبوا َكِثيًر ا ِّمَن الَّظِّن ِإَّن َبْعَض الَّظِّن ِإْثٌم ۖ َواَل‬
‫َأ‬ ‫َأ ْأ‬ ‫َأ‬ ‫َأ‬
‫َتَج َّسُس وا َواَل َيْغَتب َّبْعُضُكم َبْعًضا ۚ ُيِح ُّب َحُدُكْم ن َي ُكَل َلْح َم ِخ يِه‬
‫﴾َمْيًتا َفَكِرْهُتُموُه ۚ َواَّتُقوا الَّلَه ۚ ِإَّن الَّلَه َتَّواٌب َّر ِح يٌم ﴿‪١٢‬‬
‫َيا َأُّيَها الَّناُس ِإَّنا َخ َلْقَناُكم ِّمن َذَكٍر َوُأنَثٰى َوَجَعْلَناُكْم ُش ُعوًبا َوَقَباِئَل‬
‫﴾ِلَتَعاَر ُفوا ۚ ِإَّن َأْكَر َمُكْم ِع نَد الَّلِه َأْتَقاُكْم ۚ ِإَّن الَّلَه َعِليٌم َخ ِبيٌر ﴿‪١٣‬‬
‫َقاَلِت اَأْلْعَر اُب آَمَّنا ۖ ُقل َّلْم ُتْؤِمُنوا َوَلٰـِكن ُقوُلوا َأْس َلْمَنا َوَلَّما ۞‬
‫َيْدُخ ِل اِإْليَماُن ِفي ُقُلوِبُكْم ۖ َوِإن ُتِطيُعوا الَّلَه َوَر ُس وَلُه اَل َيِلْتُكم ِّمْن‬
‫﴾َأْعَماِلُكْم َش ْيًئا ۚ ِإَّن الَّلَه َغُفوٌر َّر ِح يٌم ﴿‪١٤‬‬
‫ِإَّنَما اْلُمْؤِمُنوَن اَّلِذيَن آَمُنوا ِبالَّلِه َوَر ُس وِلِه ُثَّم َلْم َيْر َتاُبوا َوَج اَهُدوا‬
‫ُأ‬ ‫َأ‬ ‫َأ‬
‫ِب ْمَواِلِهْم َو نُفِس ِهْم ِفي َسِبيِل الَّلِه ۚ وَلٰـِئَك ُهُم‬
‫﴾الَّصاِدُقوَن ﴿‪١٥‬‬

‫‪I.‬‬ ‫‪If two parties among the believers fall into a quarrel, we must try‬‬
‫‪to make peace between them. If one transgresses against the‬‬
‫‪other we must stop them using force. When they comply with the‬‬
commands of Allah (SWT), a just and fair peace be made between
them.
II. Believing men should not laugh on other believing men. Similarly
believing women should not make fun of other believing women.
III. They should not defame each other or be sarcastic.
IV. They should not call each other by offensive nicknames.
V. They should avoid suspicion.
VI. They should not spy on each other.
VII. They should not backbite.
VIII. We are offspring of one male and one female.
IX. Most honoured in the sight of Allah is the one who is the most
righteous.
X. After submission, one only becomes a true believer when he
believes in Allah (SWT) and His messenger and never has any
doubts afterwards and strives with his belongings and with his
person in the cause of Allah (SWT).

Sura Al Baqarah, Ayah 177 ( Al Birr – Piety, Righteousness )

۞ ‫َّلْيَس اْلِبَّر َأن ُتَوُّلوا ُوُج وَهُكْم ِقَبَل اْلَمْش ِرِق َواْلَمْغِرِب‬
‫َوَلٰـِكَّن اْلِبَّر َمْن آَمَن ِبالَّلِه َواْلَيْوِم اآْل ِخ ِر َواْلَماَل ِئَكِة َواْلِكَتاِب‬
‫ْل‬ ‫ْل‬ ‫َل‬ ‫ْل‬
‫َوالَّنِبِّييَن َوآَتى ا َماَل َع ٰى ُحِّبِه َذِوي ا ُقْر َبٰى َوا َيَتاَمٰى‬
‫َأ‬
‫َواْلَمَس اِكيَن َواْبَن الَّسِبيِل َوالَّس اِئِليَن َوِفي الِّر َقاِب َو َقاَم‬
‫الَّصاَل َة َوآَتى الَّز َكاَة َواْلُموُفوَن ِبَعْهِدِهْم ِإَذا َعاَهُدوا ۖ َوالَّصاِبِريَن‬
ۖ ‫ِفي اْلَبْأَس اِء َوالَّضَّر اِء َوِح يَن اْلَبْأِس ۗ ُأوَلٰـِئَك اَّلِذيَن َصَدُقوا‬
١٧٧﴿ ‫﴾َوُأوَلٰـِئَك ُهُم اْلُمَّتُقوَن‬
I. Righteousness is not that one turns his face to the east or the west.
But the righteous are:-
II. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and the Angels and the
Scripture and the Prophets.
III. Who gives his wealth to the kinsfolk and to the orphans and the
needy and the wayfarer and to those who ask and to set the slaves
free.
IV. Who observes Salah (obligatory prayers) and pays the Zakah (the
poor-due).

V. Those who keep their promises when they make them.

VI. They remain firm and patient in pain (suffering, poverty) and
adversity (suffering, illness) and throughout the periods of panic.

2- Surah 4, AnNisa, Ayah 135 Justice and True Witness

۞ ‫َيا َأُّيَها اَّلِذيَن آَمُنوا ُكوُنوا َقَّواِميَن ِباْلِقْس ِط ُش َهَداَء ِلَّلِه‬


‫َوَلْو َعَلٰى َأنُفِس ُكْم َأِو اْلَواِلَدْيِن َواَأْلْقَر ِبيَن ۚ ِإن َيُكْن َغِنًّيا‬
ۚ ‫َأْو َفِقيًر ا َفالَّلُه َأْوَلٰى ِبِهَما ۖ َفاَل َتَّتِبُعوا اْلَهَوٰى َأن َتْعِدُلوا‬
﴿ ‫َوِإن َتْلُووا َأْو ُتْعِرُضوا َفِإَّن الَّلَه َكاَن ِبَما َتْعَمُلوَن َخ ِبيًر ا‬
١٣٥﴾
I. Standout firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even though it be
against you or your parents or the kin.
II. Do not care if someone is rich or poor.
III. Follow not the lusts (of your heart) lest you swerve.
IV. If you distort (justice) or decline to do justice, verily Allah is well
acquainted with all that you do.

Surah 9, AlTaubah, Ayah 71

‫ْأ‬ ‫َأ‬
‫َواْلُمْؤِمُنوَن َواْلُمْؤِمَناُت َبْعُضُهْم ْوِلَياُء َبْعٍض ۚ َي ُمُر وَن‬
‫ِباْلَمْعُر وِف َوَيْنَهْوَن َعِن اْلُمنَكِر َوُيِقيُموَن الَّصاَل َة‬
‫َوُيْؤُتوَن الَّز َكاَة َوُيِطيُعوَن الَّلَه َوَر ُس وَلُه ۚ ُأوَلٰـِئَك‬
٧١﴿ ‫﴾َس َيْر َح ُمُهُم الَّلُه ۗ ِإَّن الَّلَه َعِزيٌز َحِكيٌم‬
I. The believers, men and women are helpers, protectors and friends of
each other.
II. They enjoin what is just and good.
III. They forbid what is evil.
IV. They establish regular prayers.
V. They practice regular charity.
VI. They obey Allah (SWT) and His messenger.
