CHAPTER 3 – PAIR OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

PROBLEMS FOR PRACTICE

1. For what value of p, the pair of linear equations (p + 2)x – (2p + 1)y = 3(2p – 1) and

2x – 3y = 7 has a unique solution.

2. For what values of a and b, the following pair of linear equations have infinite number of

solutions? 2x + 3y = 7, a(x + y) – b(x – y) = 3a + b – 2.

3. Find the value of k for no solutions: (3k + 1)x + 3y – 2 = 0, (k2 + 1)x + (k – 2)y – 5= 0.

4. Solve graphically the pair of linear equations 3x – 4y + 3 = 0 and 3x + 4y – 21 = 0. Find

the coordinates of vertices of triangular region formed by these lines and x-axis. Also,

calculate the area of this triangle.

5. In a two digit number, the ten’s place digit is 3 time the unit’s place digit. When the

number is decreased by 54, digits get reversed. Find the original number.

6. The sum of a two digit number and the number formed by interchanging its digits is 110.

If 10 is subtracted from the first number, the new number is 4 more than 5 times the sum

of the digits in the first number. Find the first number.

7. A boat takes 12 hours to cover a distance of 24 km upstream and it takes only 3 hours to

come back the same distance. Find the speed of the boat in still water and that of the stream.

8. Points A and B are 100km apart on highway. One car stats from A and another from B at

the same time. If they travel in the same direction at different speeds, they meet in 5 hours. If

they travel towards each other, they meet in 1 hour. What are the speeds of the two cars?
9. A sailor goes 8 km downstream in 40 minutes and returns back to the starting point

in 1 hour. Find the speed of the sailor in still water and the speed of the current.

10. Ten years later, A will be twice as old as B and five years ago, A was three times as old

as B. What are the present ages of A and B?

11. The present age of a father is three years more than three times the age of the son. Three

years hence, father’s age will be 10 years more than twice the age of the son. Determine their

present ages.

12. Three times the age of my father added to seven times the age of my sister is 183 years.

Six times the difference between their ages added to 9 years is three times the sum of their

ages. Determine their present age.

13. The length of a room exceeds its breadth by 3m. If the length is increased by 3m and

breadth is decreased by 2m, the area remains the same. Find the length and the breadth of the

room.

14. If the length of a rectangle is reduced by 5 units and its breadth is increased by 2 units, the

area rectangle is reduced by 80 square units. However, if we increase its length by 10 units

and decrease be breadth by 5 units, its area is increased by 50 square units. Find the length

and breadth of the rectangle.

15. The sum of the numerator and denominator of a fraction is 3 less than twice the

denominator. If the numerator and denominator are decreased by 1, the numerator becomes

half the denominator. Determine the fraction.
