READING
PASSAGE 1
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best
answer to each of the questions.
Reading for pleasure as a child has been powerfully linked in research to the development of
vocabulary and maths skills up to the age of 16. But does reading still have a part to play in the breadth
of our adult vocabulary? Does it matter what kind of books you read, or is it just the amount of reading
that counts? Our study of a representative sample of more than 9,400 British people born in 1970 looked
at how vocabularies developed between the ages of 16 and 42. The test involved asking people to pair
words from one list with words of a similar meaning from another.
The findings, fortunately, show that learning doesn't stop at the end of the school years – whether they
read regularly or not. In fact, our study members demonstrated large gains in vocabulary between the ages
of 16 and 42. At age 16, their average vocabulary test score was 55%. By age 42, the study members
scored an average of 63% on the same test. Another positive result is that reports of the death of reading.
seem to have been exaggerated. More than a quarter, or 26%, of the respondents said that they read books
in their spare time on a daily basis, with a further 33% saying that they read for pleasure at least once a
month.
People varied widely in the types of books they liked to read and this was linked to their level of
educational attainment. We were struck by the differences in literary tastes between graduates of the elite
Russell Group of UK universities and other universities. When asked which kinds of books they usually
liked to read, 43% of graduates of Russell Group universities included classic fiction such as Jane Eyre
or Bleak House, compared to 29% of those of other universities and 11% of people with no qualifications.

So who increased their vocabularies the most between the ages of 16 and 42? Our statistical analysis took
account of differences in people's socio-economic backgrounds and in their vocabulary test scores at the
ages of five, ten and 16. We found that reading for pleasure in both childhood and adulthood made a
difference to rates of vocabulary growth between adolescence and middle-age. Reading for pleasure as a
child appeared to exert a long-term positive influence on vocabulary development up to the age of 42. In
addition, those who continued to read for pleasure frequently at the age of 42 experienced larger
vocabulary gains between adolescence and mid-life than those who did not read. It seems that it isn't just
how much you read, but also what you read that makes a difference. People in their 40s who now read
high-brow fiction (such as classic fiction and contemporary literary fiction) made the greatest vocabulary
gains.

PASSAGE 2
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best
answer to each of the questions.
In the early years of children's lives, parents are the most important figures in their world. Their
approval, love and support are critical to children. Consequently, much of what children do and say is
aimed at maintaining that love and approval. As children get older and have more contact with people
other than their parents, their behaviors and attitudes will be influenced by other people. When children
are young, many parents maintain control over most aspects of their children's life. These parents choose
their children's clothes, friends, hobbies and so on. As children grow older, they realize they can never
grow into adults without having control of their lives. Consequently, teens begin to fight for control.
For teens, this struggle for adulthood is terribly risky because they risk losing the most important thing in
their lives - the love of parents. At the same time, parents may feel rejected, hurt and anxious about teens'
abilities to care for themselves. Their struggle is stressful because everyone cares so greatly about each
other.
Both parents and teenagers are experiencing changes. There's a growing belief among professionals
who work with parents and teens that adult problems contribute equally with teen problems in making
these years difficult between parents and children. Upon entering middle age, many adults are asking
themselves what they have done so far and what they want to do next. Some may be depressed by a sense
that they have not achieved all they had hoped personally or professionally. Others may be anxious that

their children are growing up and leaving home and they are forced to answer "Now what?". In these
situations, the rebellious teen may add to parents' feelings of uncertainty about themselves. "Good"
parents, after all, would not be having this struggle with their child, they think.
A common complaint from teens is that parents "want me to be the way they want me to be". In other
words, many parents want a certain career, appearance or college for their teens. These parents experience
varying amounts of disappointment and sometimes anger because their children fail to live up to the
parents' expectations.
Accepting teens as individuals who will have to make their own decisions about how to be an adult in
the world can be extremely hard to do. But the healthy teen will grow up and do just that. Parents who
reject their teens for failing to follow the parents' plans or who reject some aspects of their teen's life may
find themselves painfully alienated from this person who they care about so much.
