3 Hide A Treasure!
Read the instructions and find the treasure.
Once upon a time there was a pirate. On one of his voyages
to the Caribbean Seas, he found a treasure chest. The
pirate took the treasure back to his home and buried it. The
pirate had four children. He made instructions and gave
them to his children. But each child had only part of the
instructions. So they could only find the treasure together.
Here are the instructions. Can you find the treasure?

1. Start at a church and follow the railway. Go through the

tunnel and over the railway bridge to the town. When you
arrive at the town, turn left and follow the road. Go over
two bridges. At the end of the second bridge, turn right
and follow the road to the end. This is point A.
2. There is a castle between a lake and a forest. Start here
and walk to the road. At the road, turn left and go through
a village. Stay on the road and go around the lake. In front
of you there is a hill. Climb to the top of the hill. This is
point C.
3. From the town cross the sea to another island. When you
arrive on the other island, follow the road until you come
to a bridge over a river. Follow the river valley between
the two hills until you come to the mouth of the river. This
is point B.
4. There are two lakes on the map. Start with one lake behind
you and follow the road to the other lake. When you reach
the first bridge, leave the road and follow the river until
you come to the railway bridge. Turn right and follow the
railway through the tunnel to the village. Opposite the
village there is a small island. Cross to the island. Stand
in the middle of the island. This is point D.

Where is the treasure?

You now have all the points. Draw a line to join A to B and
C to D. The treasure is under the place where the two
lines cross.

4 Strange Architecture
Match the depicted buildings with the corresponding descriptions :

1. What looks like left-over boulders from the Stone Age is actually a house. Casa do Penedo or the ‘House of Stone’, was
built in 1974 with four different boulders. The Portuguese getaway has no electricity so the homeowners use candlelight
to see when indoors. That said, the house boasts a cozy fireplace, a swimming pool carved into stone and logs for stairs.
2. Wonderworks is an entertainment center focused on science exhibits with five locations in the United States. The company’s
slogan is “Let Your Imagination Run Wild”. The exhibits are housed in a themed building designed by architect Terry
Nicholson, looking as if it were picked up by severe weather and dropped upside down on an existing building.
3. The original idea of these cubic houses came about in the 1970s. Piet Blom has developed a couple of these cubic
houses that were built in Helmond. The city of Rotterdam asked him to design housing on top of a pedestrian bridge
and he decided to use the cubic houses idea. The concept behind these houses is that he tries to create a forest by
each cube representing an abstract tree; therefore the whole village becomes a forest.
4. This project, located in the heart of Kansas City, represents one of the pioneer projects behind the revitalization of
downtown. The people of Kansas City were asked to help pick highly influential books that represent Kansas City.
Those titles were included as ‘bookbindings’ in the innovative design of the parking garage exterior, to inspire people
to utilize the downtown Central Library.
5. A trend that started and continues to this day in town Waikato in New Zealand is the use of old, discarded, corrugated
iron to create “works of art”. Perhaps the most significant of these are the “Sheep” and “Dog” buildings on Main Road,
Tirau. Housing a wool and craft store the “Sheep” building would be considered a great example of mimetic architecture.
The “Dog” building houses the town’s Information Center.
6. The “Crooked House” is an unusual piece of architecture located on Monte Cassino Street in Sopot, Poland. Completed
in 2004, the building was designed by Szotyñscy and Zaleski who were inspired by the fairytale illustrations and
drawings of Jan Marcin Szancer and Per Dahlberg as well as designs by Antonio Gaudi. The magical effect draws
many visitors to the property which houses restaurants, cafés and shops.
