Note: All questions are compulsory. Attempt subparts of a question at one place and assume any
missing data suitably. Use of steam table, Mollier diagram is allowed.

Q1. 50 grams of water at 25 °C is converted into steam at 300 °C at constant atmospheric pressure.
The specific heat of water is 4.2 J/g K and the latent heat of vaporization at 100 °C is 2260 J/g. For
water vapour, assume pv = mRT, where R = 0.4619 kJ/kg K and cp /R = a + bT + cT2 , where a =
3.634; b = 1.195 x 10-3 K -1and c = 0.135x10-6 K-2. Calculate the total entropy change during
conversion of water to steam. Also, draw the temperature-entropy (T-s) diagram from initial state to
final state. (6)

Q2. Steam at a pressure of 5 bar passes into a tank containing water where it gets condensed. The
mass and temperature in the tank before the admission of steam are 50 kg and 20 °C, respectively.
Calculate the dryness fraction of steam as it enters the tank if 3 kg of steam gets condensed and the
resulting temperature of the mixture becomes 40 °C. Take water equivalent of tank as 1.5 kg.
(6)

Q3. In a Rankine cycle, the steam at inlet to turbine is saturated at a pressure of 35 bar and the
exhaust pressure is 0.2 bar. Determine the followings:
(a) Pump work (b) Turbine work
(c) Rankine efficiency (d) Condenser heat flow, and
(e) The dryness at the end of expansion. Assume flow rate of 9.5 kg/s. (6)

Q4. Two kg of air at 500 kPa. 80 °C expands adiabatically in a closed system until its volume is
doubled and its temperature becomes equal to that of surroundings, which is at 100 kPa and 5 °C.
For the process, determine
(a) The maximum work
(b) Change in the availability and
(c) Irreversibility
For air, take Cy= 0.718 kJ/kg K and R = 0.287 kJ/kg K. (6)

Q5. A compressor operating at steady state takes in 1 kg/sec of air at 1 bar and 25 °C and
compresses it to to 8 bar and 160 °C. Heat Transfer from the compressor to it surroundings occurs
at a rate of 100 kW.
(a) Determine the power input in kW
(b) Evaluate the 2"d law efficiency for the compressor
Neglect the K.E and P.E. changes. Take To = 25°C and Po = 1 bar. For air, take Cp = 1.005 kJ/kg K
and R = 0.287 kJ/kg K. (6)
