Introduction to Pythagoras' Theorem

What is Pythagoras’ Theorem?

Pythagoras' Theorem applies to right-angled triangles and states:

a2+b2=c2a^2 + b^2 = c^2a2+b2=c2

Where:

● a,ba, ba,b: the two legs (shorter sides).

● ccc: the hypotenuse (longest side, opposite the right angle).

How It Works

1. Square the lengths of the two shorter sides.

2. Add the results to find the square of the hypotenuse.

Example

In a triangle with legs 333 and 444, find the hypotenuse:

c2=32+42=9+16=25c^2 = 3^2 + 4^2 = 9 + 16 = 25c2=32+42=9+16=25 c=25=5c = \sqrt{25} =

5c=25=5

Applications

1. Architecture: Ensuring walls meet at right angles.

2. Navigation: Calculating direct distances (e.g., across a diagonal).

Activity

Find the missing side:

● Given a=5a = 5a=5, b=12b = 12b=12, find ccc: c2=52+122=25+144=169 ⟹ c=13c^2 =

5^2 + 12^2 = 25 + 144 = 169 \implies c = 13c2=52+122=25+144=169⟹c=13
