National & States Affairs
1. The apex child rights body, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR),
identified more than 11 lakh children vulnerable to child marriage in 2023-24 and intervened
through steps such as family counselling, school reintegration efforts and coordination with
law enforcement. The NCPCR also underscored the efforts it took under the Prohibition of
Child Marriage Act (PCMA), 2006, through collaboration with child marriage prohibition
officers (CMPOs), district authorities and other stakeholders. Further, more than 1.2 crore people were reached through the
awareness campaigns, with Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh emerging as leaders in the fight against child
marriage. Uttar Pradesh, with more than 5,00,000 such children, showed a strong response in addressing this issue, followed
by States such as Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. The preventive measures also included mapping schools to identify children
absent for 30 consecutive days without notice and coordinating with school authorities to monitor dropouts. Despite these
efforts, the NCPCR report highlighted gaps in data collection and enforcement in certain States, including Goa and Ladakh,
leading to difficulty in gathering comprehensive information. NCPCR is a statutory body set up in March 2007 under the
Commissions for Protection of Child Rights (CPCR) Act, 2005. It is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Women
& Child Development. {Read more}

capacity 40 TPD and (iii) Steel Authority of India Ltd (Ranchi) with plant capacity 3200 TPD. These pilot projects can
demonstrate safe and secure operations of green hydrogen-based steel-making processes, validating technical feasibility
and performance, and evaluating their economic viability thereby leading to low-carbon iron and steel production. Earlier
the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy had issued guidelines for the implementation of pilot projects in the steel sector
under this Mission. The objectives of the scheme were to identify advanced technologies for utilizing green hydrogen in
steelmaking, through pilot projects. The National Green Hydrogen Mission was launched on 4th January 2023 with an outlay

3. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has significantly changed its criteria for placing countries on its
lists (Black List and Grey List) to alleviate the burden on least developed countries while focusing on
nations that pose greater threats to the global financial system. Under the revised criteria, jurisdictions
will be prioritized for active review if they meet the referral criteria and are (i) An FATF Member; (ii) A
country on the World Bank High-Income Countries list; or (iii) A country that has financial sector assets above $10 billion.
Least developed countries, as defined by the United Nations, will not be prioritized for active review unless the FATF agrees
that they pose a significant money laundering, terrorist financing, or proliferation financing risk. In such cases, least
developed countries entering the review process may be granted a longer observation period of 2 years to work on progress
against their Key Recommended Action roadmap. The FATF’s changes will ensure that the listing process better targets
countries posing the greatest risk to the international financial system and provides more adequate support to low-capacity
countries. Algeria, Angola, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Croatia, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Haiti, Kenya, Lebanon, Mali,
Monaco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Philippines, South Africa, South Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Venezuela, Vietnam and
Yemen are on the FATF grey list, while the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Iran and Myanmar are in the black list.

9. IIT Indore has developed a compact device for early detection of breast cancer, especially among
women in rural and remote areas, at an affordable cost. The device, developed by Prof Srivathsan
Vasudevan of the Department of Electrical Engineering, aims at saving the lives of patients by
detecting breast cancer in its early stages. The device is based on the principle of Photoacoustic
Spectral Response (PASR), which combines optical and acoustic signals to detect abnormal tissue changes. The device can
distinguish between cancerous and non-cancerous tissues. A compact pulsed laser diode (PLD) is used to generate light,
which interacts with the tissue. The response is then analysed to identify whether the tissue is normal, benign, or malignant.

demand growth in the world. Further, India is on track to become the third-largest economy in the world by 2028. IEA
projected energy supply in India rising from 45.4 exajoule (EJ) in 2023 to 60.7 EJ in 2025 and 70.5 EJ in 2050 under stated
policies (STEP). This gets tempered to 52 EJ in 2035 and 62 EJ by 2050 under announced pledges (APS). Oil demand is seen
growing from 5.2 million barrels per day to 7.1 million bpd by 2035. Total energy demand in India is seen increasing by nearly
35% by 2035 in the STEPS, and its electricity generation capacity nearly triples to 1,400 GW by 2035. Coal is set to retain a
