A Wave Motion
Reflection of light (2)

Name :

School :
Objectives:
reflection of light
• state the laws of reflection
• construct images formed by a plane mirror graphically

2
1. A man stands at O just to one side of a plane mirror XY. Can he see objects A, B
and C by the plane mirror?

2. A point source of light S is placed 10 cm in front of a plane mirror XY. The reflected
ray is detected at A which is 5 cm in front of the mirror as shown in the figure. Find
the position of the reflection of the ray.

3
3. In the figure below,
(a) locate the position of the image of O in the mirror XY;

(b) can a man at A see the image of O?

(c) if the man moves from A to B, where does the image of O move?

4
4. The figure below shows the image of a letter which is held in front of a plane mirror
MN seen by an observer O.

Draw a ray diagram to show:

(a) the position and appearance of the letter in front of the mirror.
(b) how a certain point A on the image seen by the observer.

5. A L-shaped object is placed in front of a plane mirror as shown. p and q are rays
incident on the mirror.

(c) Draw the image of the L-shaped object formed by the plane mirror.

5
6. The figure shows a large plane mirror fixed on the wall of a dancing room. The floor of
the room is covered with square tiles.

6
7. The figure shows a large plane mirror fixed on the wall of a room. The floor of the
room is covered with square tiles.
Two chairs are placed at P and Q as shown.

(a) On the figure, draw the image of the floor as seen in the mirror.
(b) A man, sitting at A, looks into the mirror. Can he see the image of the chair at
(i) P?
(ii) Q?
Draw ray diagrams to illustrate your answers.
(c) What fraction of the area of the floor can he see in the mirror?

7
8.

8
9. A man stands between a vertical plane mirror and a tree as shown in the figure. The
eyes of man are 1.5 m above the ground and the height of the tree is 3.5 m.

(a) Draw a ray diagram to show how the light rays from the top and the foot of the
tree are seen by the man.

(b) What is the minimum length of the plane mirror for the man to see the whole
length of the tree?

9
(c) How high of the plane mirror of minimum length be hung so that the man
can see the whole length of the tree?

(d) If the man walks 0.5 m further away from the mirror, can he still see the
whole length of the tree?

10
10. The figure shows a simple periscope consisting two plane mirrors M1 and M2. An
object O is placed 20 cm in front of M1.

(a) Locate the first image of O in M1.

(b) Locate the second image of O in M2.

(c) Trace the two incomplete rays accurately until they reach the eye.

11
(d) How far is the final image behind M2 as seen by the observer?

(e) Periscope is used in tanks to observe objects in front of it. What is the
disadvantage?
