INTRODUCTION
A monument is a structure designed to commemorate an event, person, or idea, serving as a
tangible representation of memory and cultural significance. Monument design is an artful
balance of form, materiality, and symbolism, aiming to evoke emotional and intellectual
responses. This project challenges students to delve into the conceptual, symbolic, and
spatial elements of designing a monument.

DESIGN CHALLENGE
For this assignment, students are tasked with designing a monument that translates an
abstract concept into an architectural expression. The concept could commemorate a
historical event, a cultural milestone, or a personal ideology. The design should focus on
symbolism, spatial interaction, and the emotional impact on users.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS
Concept ● What is the core idea or message your monument will convey?
Development ● Develop a narrative that links the design elements to the concept.

Symbolism ● How will you use forms, geometry, and materials to symbolize your
Abstraction chosen theme?
● Consider abstract shapes to communicate complex ideas.

Spatial ● How will users interact with the monument physically and
Interaction emotionally?
● Explore pathways, circulation, and the role of light and shadow.

Materiality ● What materials will you use to evoke the desired atmosphere?
Structure ● Consider sustainable and durable materials to ensure permanence.

Contextual ● How does the monument relate to its site and surroundings?
Integration ● Ensure the design responds to both natural and cultural contexts.
DESIGN OBJECTIVES
1. Commemorative Focus: Create a monument that meaningfully represents an event,

SITE SELECTED
The site for monument design is a square-shaped open space within the University of
Punjab, positioned between the Cafeteria, the Department of Architecture, and the IT
Department. This central, public area is a hub of student activity, providing a dynamic
backdrop for interaction and reflection.
The design will leverage the site's geometry, accessibility, and natural light, incorporating a
play of light and shadow to create a visually engaging and symbolically meaningful
monument that resonates with the academic and cultural ethos of the university.
