INTRODUCTION TO PERMUTATION AND
COMBINATION
Permutation and combination are two fundamental concepts in combinatorics, a branch of mathematics
that deals with counting and arranging objects.
Permutation:
A permutation is an arrangement of objects in a specific order. It is the number of ways in which a
selection of r objects can be arranged from a set of n distinct objects, where the order matters. In other
words, permutation is the arrangement of objects in which the order is important. For example, if you
have three letters A, B, and C, the permutations of selecting two letters at a time are AB, AC, BA, BC,
CA, and CB.
Combination:
A combination is a selection of objects from a set in which the order does not matter. It is the number of
ways in which a selection of r objects can be chosen from a set of n distinct objects, where the order
does not matter. For example, if you have three letters A, B, and C, the combinations of selecting two
letters at a time are AB, AC, and BC.
What Is Permutation
Basically Permutation is an arrangement of objects in a particular way or order. While dealing with permutation
one should concern about the selection as well as arrangement. In Short, ordering is very much essential in
permutations. In other words, the permutation is considered as an ordered combination.

The formula for permutation of n objects for r selection of objects is given by: P(n,r) = n!/(n-r)!
For example, the number of ways 3rd and 4th position can be awarded to 10 members is given by:
P(10, 2) = 10!/(10-2)! = 10!/8! = (10.9.8!)/8! = 10 x 9 = 90..

Permutation can be classified in three different categories:

● Permutation of n different objects (when repetition is not allowed)

● Repetition, where repetition is allowed
● Permutation when the objects are not distinct (Permutation of multi sets)
What Is Combination
An arrangement of objects where the order in which the objects are selected does
not matter.” The combination means “Selection of things”, where the order of
things has no importance
For example, if we want to buy a milkshake and we are allowed to combine any 3
flavours from Apple, Banana, Cherry, and Durian, then the combination of Apple,
Banana, and Cherry is the same as the combination Banana, Apple, Cherry. So if
we are supposed to make a combination out of these possible flavours, then
firstly, let us shorten the name of the fruits by selecting the first letter of their
names. We only have 4 possible combinations for the question above ABC, ABD,
ACD, and BCD. Also, do notice that these are the only possible combination. This
can be easily understood by the combination Formula.
USES OF PERMUTATION IN REAL LIFE

1. Combination lock : A combination lock is a useful item that helps safeguard our belongings when we are
out and about. Now, we all know that one can open a combination lock only when the perfect code, in the correct
sequential order, is entered. If the code is not in the right order, it won’t open.

2. Passwords : Every day we find ourselves typing passwords on our laptops or mobile phones. Passwords
also help in keeping our digital information safe. Similar to a combination lock, passwords are also an arrangement of
alphabets, digits, and characters in a particular order.

3. Phone numbers : Phone numbers typically consist of different parts. For instance, in the phone
number +1- 603-452-5521, +1 is the country code, 603 is the area code, 452 is the exchange code, and
5521 is the subscriber code. In its entirety, a complete phone number is also a permutation, as one must
follow the same order to dial and connect to the right person.
USES OF COMBINATION IN REAL LIFE
1. Making a cup of coffee : Make yourself a cup of coffee and observe the sequence in which
you add milk, water, coffee, and sugar. Do you think your coffee will taste different if you add the
ingredients in a different order to the cup? Not really. That’s because your coffee is a combination
of its ingredients.

2. Picking three finalists : Suppose there is a dance competition wherein the judges have to
select three finalists for the last round out of seven participants. Here the concept of combination
will come into play because the judges must pick three contestants in no particular order for the
final round.

3. Selecting 2 out of 5 questions : Another real-life example of combinations is when you have
the option of solving a few questions out of a larger set of questions. Say, for example, your
question paper mentions you can solve any two out of five questions in a section.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PERMUTATIONS AND
COMBINATIONS
● Permutations and combinations are two fundamental concepts in
combinatorics.
● The main difference between permutations and combinations is that
permutations take into account the order of the objects, whereas
combinations do not.
● Permutations count arrangements, while combinations count selections.
● Permutations involve calculating the number of ways objects can be ordered,
while combinations involve calculating the number of ways objects can be
chosen without regard to their order.
