function.
Competency Illustrates a relation and a function. (M8AL-IIc-1)
I. OBJECTIVES
Knowledge:  Differentiates relation and function
Skills:  Draw using mapping diagram to illustrate the given relation
Attitude:  Shows accuracy in mapping a given relation.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing or presenting ACTIVITY: MY RELATION!
the new lesson Note to the Teacher: Start the class by asking the following:
1. How are you related to your mother?”
daughter or son
2. Who is Roxan (it could be a name of the classmate) in your life?
classmate or friend
3. Let the student cite another kind of relationship that will relate to the
students like bestfriend, sister, brother, mother, father, aunt, or any other.
4. Give the students a sample of ordered pair.
{ (2 , 5), (3 , 6), (4 , 7), (5 , 8, (6 , 9)}
5. Each of them will identify that value of x or the abscissa
2, 3, 4, 5, 6
6. And the value of y or the ordinate.
5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Note: Lead the students to the concept of relation.

B. Establishing a purpose Motive Questions:
for the lesson 1. How many values are there in x?
Ans: 5
2. How about in y?
Ans. 5
3. How did you identify the values of x? How about y?
Ans. Through identifying the first term for x, and the second term for y.

Note: Discuss to the class that relation is any set of ordered pairs. A function is a
special type of relation in which every element in the domain (abscissa) is mapped
to exactly one element in the range (ordinate).
C. Presenting examples of Activity 2. CLASSIFY ME!
the new lesson

1. Are you able to classify each object?

2. How many objects can be found in each column?
3. How did you classify the object?

B. Form some ordered pairs using the format: (object, common name)
a. Column 1: ___________________________________
b. Column 2: ____________________________________
c. Column 3: ___________________________________

Ask:
1. Based on the coordinates you have formulated, is there a repetition of the
first coordinates?
2. What about the second coordinates?

D. Discussing new
concepts and practicing ACTIVITY: REPRESENTING A RELATION
new skills #1 Note: Divide the class into five groups (preferably based on their interest).

Instructions: Describe the mapping diagram below by writing the set of ordered
pairs.

Narra

Tulip Flower
Orchid

Mahogany Tree
apricot

Ask:
1. How did you make a set of ordered pairs?
Ans. through identifying the common name.
2. What elements belong to the first set? Second set?
3. Is there a repetition on the first coordinates? How about the second
coordinates? Ans. No
4. Does the set of ordered pairs represent a relation? Ans. Yes
5. How is a relation represented? Ans. Through a mapping diagram

Note: Guide the students that if the domain is always paired to unique values of
range, then the relation is considered as a function.
E. Discussing new ACTIVITY: REPRESENTATION OF RELATION
concepts and practicing
new skills #2 Note: Discuss to the class the different ways in presenting the relation.

1. Table

2. Mapping Diagram

3. Graph

4. Rule
Notice that the value of y is twice the value of x. In other words, this can
be described by the equation y = 2x, where x is an integer from -2 to 2.

The teacher will also discuss relation through other subjects;

Science (different types of relationship)
Values ( Family relation)

F. Developing Mastery ACTIVITY: Group Activity

Below are total of casualties during the different calamities occur in our country
represented in a mapping diagram. Make an ordered out of the given data.

1992 2,140

2015 3,201

2018 304

 How many elements are there in a set?

 How the data illustrated in the figure?
 Is there a relations represented?

Note: The teacher may elaborate responses of the learners.

G. Finding practical Let the learners identify some real situations that involve relations.
applications of concepts
and skills in daily living Example: Suppose you are working at GJJs marketing. You earn Php 20 per hour.
Your earnings are related to the number of hours of work.

a. How much will you earn if you work 4 hours a day? How about 5 hours? 6
hours? 7 hours? Or 8 hours?
b. Express each as an ordered pair.

Based on your answer in item 2, what is the domain? What is the range?
H. Making Guide Questions for Generalization:
Generalizations and
abstractions about the a. What is the difference between relation and a function?
lesson b. How can we identify whether the given list or group of ordered pair will
be classified as a function?

Note: Teacher must correct immediately the wrong response/s of the learner.

I. Evaluating learning Individual Work!

Draw the given relation using mapping diagram. Draw happy face if the
relation represents a function, if not, draw a sad face.

1. { ( 1 , 5 ) , ( 2 , 10 ) , ( 3 ,15 ) , ( 4 ,20 ) , ( 5 , 25 ) }
2. { (5 , 1 ) , ( 4 , 0 ) , ( 3 ,−1 ) , ( 2 ,−2 ) ,(1 ,−3)}
3. {(−5 , 1),(−4 , 3),(−3 ,5),(−2 , 7),¿ -1, 9)}
4. { x ,0 ) , ( x ,2 ) , ( x , 4 ) , ( x , 6 ) ,( x , 8)}

J. Additional Activities The teacher will use the hundred charts to represent a relation.
for application or
remediation
