PLEASE NOTE
Examination candidates may only bring authorised materials into the examination room. If a supervisor finds, during the examination, that you
have unauthorised material, in whatever form, in the vicinity of your desk or on your person, whether in the examination room or the toilets or en
route to/from the toilets, the matter will be reported to the head of school and disciplinary action will normally be taken against you. This action may
result in your being deprived of any credit for this examination or even, in some cases, for the whole unit. This will apply regardless of whether the
material has been used at the time it is found.
Therefore, any candidate who has brought any unauthorised material whatsoever into the examination room should declare it to the supervisor
immediately. Candidates who are uncertain whether any material is authorised should ask the supervisor for clarification.

Candidates must comply with the Examination Rules of the University and with the directions of supervisors.
No electronic devices are permitted during the examination.
All question papers and answer booklets are the property of the University and remain so at all times.

PART A: SHORT ANSWER PROBLEMS

Each question in PART A is worth 4 marks.

(This corresponds to 6 minutes for each question.)

The Problem-Solving Heuristic is NOT required in PART A.

Use diagrams, equations and statements where necessary to explain you answer.

Q1)
a. Briefly explain the difference between a closed system and an open system. Give an
example of each.

b. Briefly explain the difference between intensive and extensive properties. Give an
example of each.
[4 Marks]

Q2) A system consists of three particles with mass and positions (in metres) as indicated
in the plot below. Determine the (x, y) location of the centre of mass for this system.

Q3) Particle P travels with constant speed through a circular path as shown.

a. Redraw the path and draw clearly the direction of the velocity vector at point P.
Use words to describe the direction of the velocity vector.

b. Briefly describe the effect of the tangential and normal components of acceleration
on the particle’s velocity.

[4 Marks]

Q4) A hockey puck on a frozen pond is hit and given an initial speed of 15 m/s. The puck
always remains on the ice and travels a distance of 115 m before coming to rest. Draw
a free-body diagram showing the forces acting on the puck and determine the
coefficient of kinetic friction between the puck and the ice.
(Assume that the horizontal acceleration is constant.)
[4 Marks]

Q5) Hockey player A carries the puck on her stick and moves in the direction shown with
a speed vA = 4 m/s. In passing the puck to her stationary teammate at B, at what angle
𝛼 should the direction of her shot trail the line of sight (line AB) if she launches the puck
with a speed 7 m/s relative to herself?

PART B: LONG ANSWER PROBLEMS
Each question in PART B is worth 20 marks.
(This corresponds to 30 minutes per question)

Marks will be given for following the Problem-Solving Heuristic.

Complete the PSH once for each question (i.e., multiple parts within the one PSH solution).
Show all working and explain your reasoning.

Q6) The pendulum in the figure below undergoes fixed axis rotation about axis O,
swinging back and forward in the plane. The pendulum is a long slender rod of mass
1 kg and length L = 0.8 m attached to a sphere of mass 2 kg and diameter 10 cm. The
pendulum is released from rest in the position shown with q = 30° from the horizontal.
The pivot can be assumed to be frictionless.

O
q

L = 0.8 m

D = 0.1 m

a. Show that the mass moment of inertia of the pendulum about axis O is 1.66 kg·m2.
[8 Marks]

b. Determine the distance from axis O to the centre of mass of the pendulum.
[4 Marks]

c. Determine the magnitude of the angular velocity w as the pendulum passes the
vertical position.

Q7) A loaded trailer has a mass of 800 kg with centre of mass at G as shown in the
diagram. The trailer is attached to the hitch of a vehicle, which then accelerates from
rest to 60 km/h over 60 m at a constant rate, travelling in a straight line.

(Neglect friction, air resistance, and the inertia of the wheels. The hitch experiences
horizontal and vertical forces from the vehicle.)

a. When the vehicle is stationary, what is the force exerted on the trailer by the hitch of
the vehicle?
[9 Marks]

b. What is the force exerted on the trailer by the hitch of the vehicle as it accelerates?
[9 Marks]

c. What is the force exerted on the trailer by the hitch when the vehicle reaches 60
km/h and is moving with a constant velocity? Explain your answer without further
calculations.
[2 Marks]

Q8) The compound beam shown in the diagram below is supported at A by a fixed support and
at E by a roller support. There is a pin at C, connecting beam AC and beam CE.

For the loads (force and couple moment) shown on the diagram:

a. Calculate the reactions at the supports of the compound beam.

[8 Marks]

b. Calculate the internal forces at points B and D.

(You should calculate the internal shear force, normal force, and moment.)
