Congruent Triangles and

Congruency Theorems
GEOMETRY
Congruent Triangles: triangles that have all pairs of corresponding angles and
corresponding sides congruent.

This is called a Triangle Congruency Statement

Triangle Congruency Statements are used to identify

corresponding parts of triangles. The order in which the
triangles are labeled and the statement is written, tells us
the corresponding parts of the triangle.
(corresponding aka parts that match up with one another)
Congruent Triangles: triangles that have all pairs of corresponding angles and
corresponding sides congruent.

This diagram is given, draw another

triangle that is congruent and label it
according to the congruency
statement.

You can conclude that two triangles are
congruent if you are able to prove that all
of their corresponding angles and all of
their corresponding sides are congruent.

However, you can use fewer pairs of

angles and sides to show that triangles
are congruent.

For each exploration you will be

able to move some of the angles
or some of the sides. You’re goal
is to try making DIFFERENT
triangles with some of the angles
and sides locked as congruent.

Let’s Review those…
So far, we have 4
triangle congruence
theorems:

The angle MUST be included, that

is why it is SAS. This means it is
sandwiched between the two
congruent sides. It is the angle
created by those two sides.
So far, we have 4
triangle congruence
theorems:

For ASA, the side is included.

This means it is sandwiched
between the two congruent
angles. It is the side created by
those two angles.
So far, we have 4
triangle congruence
theorems:

For AAS (can also be

read SAA), the side is
non-included. This
means it is outside two
congruent angles.
So far, we have 4
triangle congruence
theorems:

For AAS it can be either

of the non-included
sides as long as they’re
corresponding sides
that are congruent.
So far, we have 4
triangle congruence
theorems:

Notice that as long as you

have 2 corresponding
congruent angles and 1
corresponding congruent
side, you can prove
congruent triangles!

You just need to be able to

recognize the difference
between ASA and AAS

This is because when the congruent angle is non-included, it

allows the third side to be different. Therefore it is not enough
info to prove congruent triangles every time.
There is one more
triangle congruence
theorem:

The most
important thing
to remember for
HL is that it can
ONLY be used for
RIGHT
TRIANGLES.
This theorem states that “if the
hypotenuse and a leg of one right triangle
are congruent to the hypotenuse and
corresponding leg of another right
triangle, then the triangles are congruent.
Determine if the triangles are
congruent and by which theorem.
Justify your reasoning.

To make things easier until you

get better at this, it may help to
redraw the diagram to separate
the triangles and line them up
with corresponding parts.

with corresponding parts.
Make sure to re-mark all of the
congruent parts you were given.
Notice that these two pieces are
congruent, BUT they are not part
of either triangle.
However, we have learned about
Segment Addition Postulate. So…
If these two segments are congruent
AND these two segments are
congruent
Then the whole segments are
congruent
Unfortunately, with this
information the triangles would
NOT be congruent because it is
SSA. There is not enough info.
Before we determine our final
answer, let’s make sure there isn’t
more information

Because the triangles overlap like

this, Angle A is the SAME for both
angles.
That means
Angle A is congruent to Angle A
(it’s congruent to itself)
Now we COULD PROVE congruent
triangles by:
SAS
Now we CAN PROVE congruent
triangles by:
SAS or ASA
