Prototype :
approximation of the product along one or more dimensions, form and function of interest

Prototyping is a key problem-solving activity in product design.

Prototyping vs Model Making

• Prototyping is a design method that uses physical prototypes to study
and test how a new product will be used, and how it will look and be
manufactured
• Model making, on the other hand, is the step-by-step method of
producing the prototype

Types of prototype

•Physical prototype: tangible artifact to approximate the product

•Analytical prototype : non-tangible representation, i.e. simulation
•Comprehensive prototype: implement most attributes of product
•Focused prototype: implement one or few attributes of product

Degree of Prototype

Alpha-prototype: exact geometry not necessary exact manufacturing process

Beta-prototype :Fully functioned, made with actual material type, exact

manufacturing process, not necessary actual assembly
process

Simulation

Analytical
What Prototype is used for?
• Learning  Will the product work?
• Communication  How it looks & feels?
• Integration Subsystem of product
• Milestone First article test before production
