Building a 1ZZ-FE engine.

To start off this introduction, get yourself a 1ZZ-FE engine either from your project
car or a junkyard or eBay, either will work as long as you have the engine block
that is the main part of this whole ordeal. The block of this engine is made of
aluminum not cast iron, as well as the cylinder head, due to this reason we cannot
be pushing too much boost or forced induction through her as she will not take the
beating for too long until she gives in. Why choose this engine over the superior
younger sister the 2ZZ-GE, particularly because the older sister came in many or
most Toyotas, specifically Corollas, Matrix’s and Celica’s, and they came equipped
from factory with a 1ZZ-FE, the XRS editions which are a rare type of class, came
quipped with the higher horsepower, higher revving 2ZZ-GE. My baby girl a 2007
Corolla LE, came with the latter, forcing me to pick the latter over the former. To
start off we need to disassemble the engine and sent out the cylinder head to a
machine shop to get resurfaced, ported and polished, to ensure maximum airflow
and performance. The engine block itself needs to be disassembled of all
components, including rods, pistons, bearings, main girdle and so on, to later be
sent to a specialist shop so they can install wet sleeves to increase engine
displacement and performance as opposed to running a stock block, which is
possible but cannot push a lot of horses. The engine block comes stock with a 1.8-
liter displacement, after having installed the sleeves the engine displacement is
boosted to a 1.93-liter displacement, which may not seem like a lot but when
combined over the 4 cylinders is a drastic step up from the OEM setup. After
having received the head and block from the respective shops, start by hooking up
the engine block to an engine stand to help you build the engine in a timely and
neat manner. The pistons that came stock from factory are cast aluminum which
are soft and not built to handle high psi of boost, for the setup we wish the run, we
are going to up to a larger, forged piston, particularly an 82.00MM Wiseco piston,
which is almost 7.00MM larger than the OEM pistons that come from factory,
which furthers helps in the building of a high performance 1ZZ-FE engine. These
piston’s will be paired with stronger, forged connecting rods which will make the
engine handle more power, reliably as well as efficiently. After having installed the
crankshaft, with new main bearings, install the main girdle with some RTV to help
seal the main girdle to the block to help ensure more strength of the overall build.
Install the 2 compression and 1 oil control rings to the new upgraded pistons and
install all the pistons in their respective places, in the order 1-4 and 2-3. After this
place the head gasket over the engine block, and in the correct orientation as well.
Place the newly surfaced and ported cylinder head over the block and make sure
the seal is impeccable as to not have any leaks in the future. Get you as set of Brian
Cower stage 3 camshafts, which have increased lift and duration, which will help
in increasing air as well as fuel flow, which equals more horses. Time the engine
according to OEM specification given in the factory manual which can be found
online. Follow all other procedures and make sure to use OEM factory toque
specifications to ensure, uniformity all over the build. Voila, you have yourself a
fully built 1ZZ-FE, engine that can hold up to 450-490 horsepower with a turbo
setup and a really good tuner. Which is magnificent comparing the 126 HP with
which is came from factory.
