F1 Updates: F1 Pre-season

Sergio Pérez is one of the most

experienced drivers on the current
Formula 1 grid. The Mexican has been
competing in the premier category
since 2011 when he arrived with
Sauber, and then moved to McLaren,
Force India and Racing Point, a team
with which he achieved his best
season in his career last year
obtaining his first victory.

In 2021, Pérez will open a new chapter

in his history by joining Red Bull. His
experience was crucial for the team to
decide for him instead of selecting
one of its young drivers, who had
recently gone through complicated
times with Alex Albon and Pierre
Gasly falling behind Max Verstappen.

With this background, the question

arises: Will Pérez work better in the
Red Bull environment with
Verstappen? "Yes, I think so," says
Peter Mücke, who was the owner of
the team where the Mexican raced in
the German Formula BMW, "because
his mental strength is what is needed
to face Verstappen."

Mücke is very confident in what Pérez

can do against the number one driver
of Red Bull Racing: "because he has
thick skin"

Of course, Verstappen is "a tough

bone to gnaw," said the Mücke
Motorsport team boss in an interview
with Motorsport.com. "There is no
doubt about that, but I think Pérez
already knows what he is doing and
what to expect. That was the best
agreement everyone could get, there
is no doubt about it. It will be
interesting to see what will happen."

Even if Mücke does not expect Pérez

to "join the team and drive for
Verstappen," he believes that the 31-
year-old driver will do better than his
predecessor Albon who "could not
overcome Verstappen," but the
situation will be different for the
newcomer thanks to his experience.

"If you're a rookie and you have a

Verstappen as a teammate in your
second year, then you won't get very
far. Pérez, on the other hand, already
has a sporting life on his back, he has
experienced everything that can be
experienced. He has been exposed to
a world with pressures and already
has thick skin."

Pérez is "one of the great

talents of Formula 1"

Mücke analyzes the qualities of the

Mexican and highlights that when he
is under pressure he knows how to
act. "When it comes to that, he is
focused and moving at the right
speed. When he's in the car, he knows
what to do."

In the past, the former racing driver

and owner of the Formula BMW team
did not always speak so positively
about Pérez, who drove for him in
2006.

A few years ago he accused him of a

"completely unprofessional and
careless" attitude. Today, Mücke puts
these statements into perspective:
"Maybe some things seemed
incorrect," says the 74-year-old man.

And he emphasizes: "I definitely have

all the respect for him. He is a
talented and he was at that time. He
was just a young man who first had to
get in shape. He didn't just push us.
But again, he is one of the great
talents of Formula 1, I'm pretty sure of
that.”
