Chapter 1
Introduction
Social Media has become integral to our lives, offering a platform for connection and self-
expression. However, beneath the curated façade lies an illusion that can Impact self-perception,
mental health, and real-world relationships.
Social media often portrays an idealized self. People selectively share polished images and
moments, creating a distorted view of reality. Social Media and media, in general, have a
significant role in shaping and affecting our culture. Traditional sources, of communication like
television, radio, newspapers, and magazines are included in the media category, as well as
contemporary ones like the internet and social media.
It can educate us on current affairs of social concerns, mold our attitudes and Ideas, support
particular ideals and ways of living, and amuse as. However, our society is also being shaped by
media and social media, which encourage materialism and individuality, foster social
comparison, disseminate false information and hate speech, and alter communication.
media has had a profound impact on modern society. It has transformed the way we
communicate, share information, and consume media. While it has brought about many positive
changes, such as the Democratic Social taxation of information and increased connectivity, it has
also had negative effects, such as the spread of misinformation and the amplification of hate
speech. In this article, we will explore the impact of social media on society and the various
ways in which it has shaped our lives.
One of the most significant impacts of social media has been the way it has revolutionized
communication. In the past, communication was largely one-to-one or one-to-many, with
information being disseminated through traditional media channels such as newspapers and
television. With social media, communication has become more interactive and immediate.
People can now share their thoughts and experiences with a global audience in real-time, and
receive instant feedback. This has led to a more connected world, where people can engage with
one another on a scale never before possible.
Social media has also transformed the way we consume media. In the past, people relied on
traditional media channels such as newspapers and television to stay informed. Today, social
media has become a primary source of news and information for many people. This has led to a
democratization of information, where anyone with an internet connection can become a citizen
journalist and share news and information with the world. However, this also means that there is
a greater potential for the spread of misinformation, as there are no gatekeepers to verify the
accuracy of the information being shared.
Another impact of social media on society has been the way it has transformed marketing and
advertising. Social media platforms have become a critical tool for businesses to reach their
target audiences. With the ability to target specific demographics, businesses can create highly
personalized marketing campaigns that are more effective than traditional advertising. This has
led to a shift in the way businesses approach marketing, with social media becoming an essential
component of any marketing strategy.
However, social media has also had negative impacts on society. One of the most significant
negative impacts has been the spread of misinformation. Social media platforms have become a
breeding ground for fake news and conspiracy theories, which can spread rapidly and have real-
world consequences. For example, misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine has led to low
vaccination rates and increased deaths from the virus.
Social media has also been criticized for its impact on mental health. Studies have shown that
social media use can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. This is because social
media often presents a distorted view of reality, with people presenting only their best selves and
creating unrealistic expectations for others. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-
esteem, particularly among young people.
Finally, social media has had a significant impact on politics and social issues. Social media has
become a platform for political activism, with movements such as Black Lives Matter
and #MeToo gaining momentum through social media campaigns. However, social media has
also been criticized for its role in the spread of hate speech and the radicalization of extremist
groups.
In conclusion, social media has had a profound impact on society, transforming the way we
communicate, share information, and consume media. While it has brought about many positive
changes, such as increased connectivity and democratization of information, it has also had
negative effects, such as the spread of misinformation and the amplification of hate speech. As
social media continues to evolve, it is essential to recognize both the positive and negative
impacts it has on society and take steps to mitigate its negative effects.
-technological shift. From analogue to digital has immensely changed the way people
communicate society. It something that cannot be wished away Sunitha and Narayan (2023)
observe that social network has become part of the daily life experience for increasing number of
people.they further raise concerned such as how do these social media fit into the lives of these
teenagers and shared on this social networking service for academic purposes.
Social networking websites content is least monitoreds and these sites through popular with
teenagers, do have many issues such as addiction and even online bullying which can have
adveise effect on their academic performance.
Banquil and chua (2023)came up with a conclusion that social media do effect ones academic
performance adversely and cause s gradual drop of grades of students. They attributes this to the
students investing his or her time in social media instead of their studies. It is therefore vital to
investigate whether apart from communicating if there is any others role that these social media
play In school going teenagers life. It is with the above backround that this study sought to find
out the effect of social media usage by students in high school on their academic perform

Chapter 2
This chapter presents related literature, journals, studies, and theories on topics relevant to the
current study. The literature that was included in this chapter will help in familiarizing every
information that is significant and similar to the present study.
The study examines the impact of social media distraction on the relationship between student
engagement and student evaluations of teachers (SET) in management education, part of the
STEM disciplines. While it is widely accepted that student engagement and evaluation of
teachers are two important constructs of active learning systems, their links, especially in the
context of management education, have not been explored. This study seeks to fill this research
gap as teachers’ appraisal and career growth greatly depend on SET across higher education
institutes worldwide. Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected from 247 student
participants from higher education institutes/universities using a questionnaire-based survey.
Further, 15 students were interviewed to glean insights from their feelings regarding social media
distractions and how it impacts their engagement and evaluation of teachers. For the quantitative
and qualitative analyses, multiple regression and thematic analysis were applied, respectively. A
word tree was developed to determine the association between experiences and contexts.
Findings: The results indicate that social media distraction moderates the relationship between
students’ cognitive engagement and their evaluation of teaching faculty. Social media
distractions disrupt student engagement inside the classroom, leading to wrong/biased
assessments of teachers’ performance. Additionally, cognitive and emotional engagement
significantly impacted student evaluations of the management college faculty. Originality/value:
The authors’ findings enable educators in higher education systems, specifically management
education, to rethink the faculty feedback system and social media distractions impeding student
engagement other than SET drawbacks.
Clicking, posting and scrolling are not the only purpose of social media. Social media has
become multipurpose forum for the people. In the educational sector, the use of social media as
interactive tools which motivate students towards learning. The aim of this research is to
investigate the impact of social media on students’ learning in Iqra University, Karachi.
Researchers conducted a complete review of the impact of social media for university students’
learning, identified the significant factors and deliberated on new models which were based on
different research studies. By using random sampling technique, students were selected for data
collection. Questionnaire was used as an instrumental tool for collection of data. IBM SPSS and
Smart PLS were used for analyzing the data. Results of this research study state that social media
creates a positive and significant impact on the learning of the students. As a part of this
research, three platforms (Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp) were discussed in this study. In
future studies, researchers can add some more or different variables to study this phenomenon in
more detail.
Social media use can bring negative effects to college students, such as social media addiction
(SMA) and decline in academic performance. SMA may increase the perceived stress level of
college students, and stress has a negative impact on academic performance, but this potential
mediating role of stress has not been verified in existing studies. In this paper, a research model
was developed to investigate the antecedent variables of SMA, and the relationship between
SMA, stress and academic performance. With the data of 372 Chinese college students (mean
age 21.3, 42.5% males), Partial Least Squares, Structural Equation Model was adopted to
evaluate measurement model and structural model. The results show that use intensity is an
important predictor of SMA, and both SMA and stress have a negative impact on college
students’ academic performance. In addition, we further confirmed that stress plays a mediating
role in the relationship between SMA and college students’ academic performance.
College and university students have been observed increasing their usage of social media
applications as it has become central to everyday life. Students can use different forms of social
media to connect, share, and view a myriad of content. When influenced by posts, social media
can have a significant impact on their lives. Social media can be a form of social support, but it
can also have a negative effect on mental health. With the increase in use, social media can
provoke individuals to begin self-comparing or gain an unrealistic expectation of themselves and
other individuals. This can lead to lower self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-worth. This
exploratory study attempts to determine the relationship between social media use and its impact
on depression, anxiety, and stress amongst students in higher education.
Turkish Online Journal of Educational Technology – TOJET, v22 n2 p85-109 Apr (2023)
Due to the emergence of the second generation of web pages, social media provides users with a
virtual interactive structure. It is succeeding in attracting many age groups, occupying its users of
a large area of time and attention, without regard to geographical, ethnic, political, or economic
differences. Each user could participate and shape the environment and structure of others by
themselves. This study aimed to identify social responsibility impact through using social media,
especially the Facebook platform, and explored how Facebook is maneuvering by its users. This
means a quantitative research method was going to be conducted. Data were gathered using a
questionnaire created by Ferri, Grifoni & Guzzo (2012). There were 26 questions in the
questionnaire. Specifically, the research was going to analyze: (1) How and why most social
media users prefer Facebook as the leading platform, (2) Facebook users’ attitude through the
threat and privacy matters, (3) Measure the effectiveness of this platform in developing social
responsibility among Facebook users. Also, this research objected to use diffusion of innovation
theory by Rogers to clarify according to what social media spread this highrise of social
responsibility effects on Facebook users (i.e., news/content sharing, networking). Moreover, it
demonstrated the positive uses of Facebook in supporting social responsibility among its users
by clarifying the method of employing them and their mechanism of action to serve ideas that
benefit society and achieve the concept of social responsibility
With the effect of globalization and digitalization, remarkable progress has been made in internet
and smart phone technology. Nowadays especially, with the increasing number of users,
smartphones have become an important need for children and young individuals. In this sense,
behavioral disorders in young individuals have become inevitable due to the increasing number
of users and the diversity of social media applications. Therefore, the problem of internet abuse
and risky social media use has emerged. While this affects the social habits of young individuals,
it also leads to psychological disorders. In addition, while serious problems arise in the social
lives of university-age students, there are also failures in their educational life. Therefore, the
main aim of our research is aimed at examining the social media habits of university students and
the effects of social media on students in terms of various variables. For the research, data was
obtained by online survey method on 333 university students studying in Cyprus. Personal
Information Form and Social Media Addiction Scales for adolescents and adults were used for
the research. SPSS programs were used in the analysis of the data. In the analysis of research
data, due to the increase in the time spent by university students on social media, a significant
relationship was found in social media addiction tests in the context of both genders. Especially
since the social media habits of the students at the university are in a controlled manner, negative
results have been obtained in their social relations and academic achievements.
In the study of Aguilar, J; Anaya, J; Tizon, J. (2019) Social media platforms allow people to
transform the communication and interaction of one another. This platform of information helps
the world build networks and online communities. Since there is an increase in the number of the
prolific users of these social media platforms worldwide, modern businesses see these as an
innovative marketing communication tool to easily attract the online market. Marketing serves as
an important strategy in ensuring the growth of businesses. Strategies such as social media posts
and email campaigns can not only engage existing consumers but spread the word to new
potential customers. Facebook advertising was also considered the most targeted kind of
advertising, it can help businesses to reach an exact audience, it’s easy to advertise to people by
age, interests, behavior, and location on Facebook. Advertising in Facebook was considered
fastest and most efficient, it can drive immediate results. Businesses can start reaching thousands
of people daily. Facebook might be a fast way to drive traffic and conversions wherein Facebook
advertising could be a best solution.
As stated by Malek, Ibrahim, Hassan, & Adnan (2021) stated in their study of A Systematic
Literature Review on Key Elements of Branding through Facebook that ubiquity, visibility,
functions, and emotional bonds with customers are all promoted by branding. It can be conveyed
through a multitude of mediums. The visual and textual components of Facebook can be used to
communicate branding. Brands are increasingly dependent on social media, which includes
Current global crisis. Facebook has become the most popular social network in our culture on
both a national and worldwide scale. This social network has transcended the virtual world and
established itself in the daily lives of millions of people who had previously had little interaction
with the network. In this particular case, the usage of a social network is portrayed as Facebook
Commerce (F-commerce), which allows users to buy from any organization or brand from the
comfort of their own home, as is usually said. For if Facebook has done anything, it is to provide
a secure, hassle-free atmosphere in which we may feel at ease (despite the risk that we are losing
a significant portion of our privacy). Regardless of these factors, for the vast majority of the
purchasing public, Facebook, or any other social network that transports them into the future,
becomes the ideal shopping mall, the ideal location to go shopping without having to deal with
the odd deceptive shop assistant.
As explained by Itliong, J. (2020), small firms must utilize their peripheral vision to focus on the
resources that are already available to them and to learn from enterprises that are tackling the
consequences of the epidemic with a positive attitude. Unlike big corporations, Small and
Medium Enterprises do not have the financial resources to invest heavily in new information
technologies, systems, and infrastructure expansion. The usage of social media is one instrument
that may provide a significant impact on market value to a small firm. Many organizations have
found that social media has been a useful tool in understanding their client base and making
choices based on that information. A firm may develop consumer intelligence that can be applied
to the value chain beyond customer relations and low-cost marketing by combining social media
and analytics. Other phases of the value chain, such as order fulfillment and new product
development, might benefit from social media analytics.
From the point of view of Valand J. & Gaur A. (2020) pointed out that the main aim of marketers
is to find a tool that helps them get a large audience. Social media is a growing trend that is
spreading around the globe. There are millions of people who are using social media every day.
They spend more time and attention on Facebook than other channels and media. Facebook is
not only providing a platform for advertisement and publicity for companies and institutions but
also provides a tool that allows users who sign up for free profiles to connect online with friends,
co-workers, or people they don’t know. When users log into their profile, they feel like
