ASSIGNMENT 1
Answer all the question
(to be submitted on or before 16th August 2019)
(Untidy/ unclear answers incur penalty marks)
Question 1
a) A three-phase star connected load of 20 kVA at 0.85 power factor lagging is fed from a
generator via three phase line. Per-phase impedance of the line is 0.02+j0.8 Ω. Line
voltage across the load is 400 V.
Calculate:
i. Active and reactive power consumed by the load.
ii. Load current
iii. Generator terminal voltage
iv. Power and power factor of the generator
v. Power loss in the line
vi. Monthly energy consumption of the load when the load operates eight hours
per day
b). Block schematic diagram of a power system is shown in figure Q1. Using appropriate
symbols of the elements of the system draw the single line diagram of the power system.

Question 2
Do a comparison of hydro power plant with coal power plants to meet the future electricity
demand of Sri Lanka. Following aspects need to be considered in the comparison
- Availability of fuel resources and its limitation
- Base load and peak load operation
- Initial and running costs
- Efficiency
- Environmental aspects
Question 3
Write an essay on “Concentrated Solar Power as source of renewable energy to meet the future
demand of the country”.
The essay should have a list of references, containing at least one research article on
concentrated solar power. The number of words of the essay should be 800-1000
(Best three essays will be uploaded to the moodle)
Question 4
Describe briefly possibilities and challenges of introducing a nuclear power plant to Sri Lankan
power system (possible capacity of a plant, location, environmental and social issues, cost of
energy should be analgised )
