Assessment: Assembling and Disassembling a Desktop Computer

Name: __________________________________________

Date: ___________________________________________

Instructor: _______________________________________

Part 1: Theoretical Knowledge

1. Define the following components:

a. Motherboard:

b. Power Supply Unit (PSU):

c. Central Processing Unit (CPU):

d. Random Access Memory (RAM):

e. Storage Devices (HDD/SSD):

f. List the tools required for assembling and disassembling a desktop computer.

Part 2: Practical Skills

Instructions: Follow the steps below for both assembling and disassembling a desktop computer. Use
the checklist to ensure all components are handled correctly.

A. Disassembly Checklist:

1. Preparation:

Gather necessary tools:

Phillips screwdriver
Anti-static wrist strap

Pliers (optional)

Plastic zip bags for screws

Power off the computer and unplug all cables from the power source.

2. Remove the Case:

Open the computer case by unscrewing or unlatching the side panels.

3. Disconnect Components:

Peripheral Devices:

Disconnect the mouse, keyboard, monitor, and any other external devices.

Internal Connections:

Carefully unplug power supply cables from the motherboard and components (CPU, GPU, drives).

Remove data cables connecting storage devices to the motherboard.

4. Remove Internal Components:

RAM Modules:

Release the clips on either side of the RAM slots and gently pull the RAM out.

CPU:

Unlock the CPU socket lever and carefully lift the CPU out, avoiding contact with the pins.

Motherboard:

Unscrew the motherboard from the case standoffs and carefully lift it out.

Storage Devices (HDD/SSD):

Unscrew or unlatch the drives and disconnect any power and data cables.

Power Supply:

Unscrew the power supply from the case and disconnect all cables.

5. Final Steps:

Ensure all screws and components are collected in labeled bags to avoid losing them.

B. Assembly Checklist:

1. Preparation:

Ensure the workspace is clean, dry, and static-free. Use an anti-static wrist strap if available.

2. Install the Power Supply:

Secure the power supply unit into the designated area of the case using screws.

3. Install the Motherboard:

Place the motherboard into the case, aligning it with the back panel I/O ports and securing it with
screws to the standoffs.

4. Install the CPU:

Insert the CPU into the socket, ensuring the notches align. Lock it in place using the lever. Apply a small
amount of thermal paste (if necessary) and attach the CPU cooler.

5. Install RAM:

Insert RAM modules into the appropriate slots, ensuring they click into place and the clips secure them.

6. Install Storage Devices:

Secure HDDs or SSDs into the drive bays and connect the power and data cables.

7. Connect Power and Data Cables:

Connect the power supply cables to the motherboard (24-pin and 4/8-pin connectors) and other
components (GPU, drives).

Connect data cables from the storage devices to the motherboard.

8. Install Peripheral Devices:

Connect the monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the appropriate ports on the back of the case.

9. Final Steps:

Close the computer case by securing the side panels.

Reconnect all external cables and power on the computer to test functionality.
