THE SCHWA SOUND / ә/ FOR WEAK FORMS.

Schwa is the name for the most common sound in English. It is a weak,
unstressed sound and it occurs in many words. Weak vowel sounds are usually
used in contextualised utterances. It is often the sound in grammar words such
as articles and prepositions. It is also used in unstressed words and syllables.
Look at the examples:

Place of articulation

● Labiodental: /f/ /v/ (lower lip and upper teeth)
● Dental: /θ/ /ð/ (tongue tip between upper and lower
teeth)
● Alveolar: /t/ /d/ /n/ /l/ /s/ /z/ (tip and sides of the tongue
● touch the alveolar ridge).
