Schwa is the name for the most common sound in English. It is a weak,
unstressed sound and it occurs in many words. Weak vowel sounds are usually
used in contextualised utterances. It is often the sound in grammar words such
as articles and prepositions. It is also used in unstressed words and syllables.

TYPES OF CONSONANTS
Place of articulation
● Plosives: /p/ /b/ /t/ /d/ /k/ /g/ (the air is released through
the mouth and pushed rapidly)
● Fricatives: /f/ /v/ /θ/ /ð/ /s/ /z/ /∫/ /ʒ/ /h/ (the air is
released through the mouth, blown softly)
● Affricates: /t∫/ /dʒ/ (the air is released through the mouth
and pushed rapidly)
● Nasals: /m/ /n/ / ŋ / (the air is released through the nose)
● Lateral: /l/ (the air is released through the mouth and the
sides of the tongue).

mouth and the central part of the tongue).
