Course Objectives:

1. Get clear idea of control system along with basic parameters and mathematical
modelling, block diagram reduction technique.
2. Understand standard test input signals, time domain analysis along with transient
response to analyse stability of system and root locus.
3. Design and analysis of frequency response analysis with Bode Plot, Nichol’s plots ,
nyquist Criteria .
4. Understand basics of Control system design with various types of controllers PI,D,
PID.
5. Understand various methodologies closed loop performance specifications, design
rules for various control system design.

Introduction to Control Systems: (12)


Introduction, Examples of control systems, Positive and negative feedback control, components
of a feedback control system, basic control actions. Block diagram reduction techniques,
Mathematical Modelling concept, Two-position Control Systems: On-off control concept and
action of an ideal relay, 1st and 2nd order system on-off control, effect of hysteresis on the
closed-loop control performance

Time response analysis: (12)


Standard test signals, time response of first and second order systems, transient and steady-state
response specifications, Response of higher order systems. System Stability: Concept of system
stability, asymptotic and bounded-input bounded-output stability,
Root Locus (12)
role of characteristic roots in stability, Routh’s stability criterion including unknown parameter
based stability, concept of root locus and its application to proportional control system analysis.
Root locus with MATLAB.

Frequency Response Analysis: (12)


Concepts of frequency domain and response, presenting frequency-response characteristics in
graphical forms-Bode, Nyquist and Nichol’s plots, closed-loop system analysis using frequency
response attributes, Nyquist stability criteria, Bode plot with MATLAB.

Design of Control Systems: (12)


Design specifications, tracking control task and closed-loop error constants, integral control
option for tracking, transient response and role of derivative action.
Closed-loop Response Control Elements: PI controllers and lag compensators for tracking
control tasks, PD controllers and lead compensators for transient response control tasks, PID
controllers and lag-lead compensators for complex control tasks.

Course Outcomes:
1. Students will be prepared for basic development and implementation of control
system.
2. To train the students with good control system background so that they can create
new product by their own.
3. To introduce and give an exposure to the students the fundamentals of control
systems, various components in the control system, time domain, frequency domain
analysis and also the system stability analysis.
4. To provide students with solid foundation in mathematics and control engineering
fundamentals to survive in any kind of competition.
