EXERCISE 1 ON DRAWING THE PROCESS FLOW CHART & PROCESS CHART

An automobile service garage is having difficulty providing oil changes in the 29 minutes
or less mentioned in its advertising. The table below summarises the 21 steps involved,
as they are carried out at present. The process starts when the mechanic directs the
customer’s arrival and ends when the customer pays for the services provided.

REQUIRED OF YOU
1 Draw the process flow chart and process chart separately, based on the details in the
table.

2 Analyse the 21 steps carried out and compute the process cycle efficiency, which is
defined by the garage as the ratio of operation time to total time in each process cycle.

3 Does it appear that the firm will be able to consistently provide service within the 29
minutes advertised?

4 What modifications in the process would you suggest if the garage’s manager wants
to reduce the customer lead time by 15%?
